obvious question are your video drivers upto date? Also have you checked codecs, and what about other video players than WMP? I use K lite codecs and windows media player classic as they have far better support than native WMP.

As mentioned by Cordas_uk - Media Player Classic (not Microsoft) is the only media player that lets you have 99% gpu accelerated video decoding - go download it!

There is a guide to how to set it up here: http://www.guru3d.com/article/accelerate-x264-1080p-movies-over-the-gpu-guide/

You need to have a good graphics card though - but it's a awesome player :p

Are you using the most up to date drivers for your graphics card and is your current hardware configuration compatible with Windows 7?

Prior to migrating to Windows 7 did you run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?
To determine if your current computer configuration will be compatible with Windows 7 please go to the following link: http://tinyurl.com/no4xb7

Another resource to verify compatibility is available at the Microsoft Windows 7 Compatibility Center located at the following link: http://bit.ly/1gW6Ns and can be used for both hardware and software concerns.
