Wow grape thanks a lot for the info, i think you should ask Fredi to lock that so it stays on top or we could just keep bumping it.

Holy $hit, thanks for the hard work, Ape.

We should start a hardware review site. Could be fun...

Cleeve, it would definitely be fun. The thing was I did it all while watching the games, so it didn't feel like work at all, just alot of time went by in the meantime(started benching at 11 am finished writing at 11PM).

I'm glad you guys are getting some useful info out of it.

CoolS, I don't know why there are differences. Everything is set to high pretty much so it's not the quality differences. Very strange.

If this is made into a sticky, I will add to it with each additional release of the Catalyst Drivers, up until I get a new rig, and Then I will have to Start from scratch, but that will be fun to with a new rig.

I own the domain highperformancepc.com ... I bought it a long time back when I was considering being a pioneer in Canadian online hardware sales.

Missed the boat on that, but it's still a good domain name for a hardware review site.

Hell, imagine all the free hardware we'd get to play with just for reviewing?... (drool)

Thats a good post. I have read alot about fast writes causing problems.
I wonder if it is a 9600 issue or a VIA issue or a combination of both?
Because I have no problems with fast writes on the 3.7s with my nforce2/9800.
I point the finger at VIA.

I just tell it like it is and some can't handle it. If your experience is different, well congratu-fukulation.

Oh man, you are cool--thanks for doing this. If at all possible, can this be a sticky? I'd offer to do one for nVidia next weekend...just my Ti4400 may not be the best/most up-to-date card to do it with and I won't have it for too much longer  . Additionally, I get some REALLY fvcked up results on 3DMark03 330...maybe you or someone else can help. It may just be that since my card isn't DX9 compatible that I'm getting such low scores. Specs:

2.66GHz P4b
1GB PC1066 RDRAM
Ti4400@300,600
Maxtor Diamondplus 9 80GB boot drive

3DMark2001SE: 13107
3DMark2003: 1600
Runs Halo, full detail at 1024x768 at around 35-40FPS.

I don't think I have any other DX9 games (unless the NFS:U demo is), so I can't really test it that way. Regardless, however, I think that score is awfully low. Especially when I score higher than you on 2001SE, but less than half of your score on 2003 330. Anyway, any recommendations would help.

BTW, it's not an unsuccesful OC, I turned it back to stock speeds and it dropped to 1254. Oh yeah, I am running Omega 45.23s performance optimized.

Damn Rambus.

You're getting low scores is natural in 3dMark 2003, because you don't have a DirectX 9 card.

There are tests the Geforce4 Ti series won't even run in 3dMark 2003.

I wouldn't sweat it though, the 4400 is a pretty darn decent card... benchmarks don't tell everything.

Phew...I'm glad because 5 minutes ago I decided to keep it until R42X/NV40. Anyway, it does run games pretty well, just evidently not DX9 stuffs (though Halo runs surprisingly well at full detail and at 1024x768). Oh well, thanks Cleeve, you made my day...

Damn Rambus.

Yeah, the funny thing is that the GF4ti is a DX8 card, not even a DX8.1 card, so it doesn't take advantage of PS1.4 (it only has up to 1.3) parts of the test, and therefore runs using PS 1.1. This gives it some strange scores against the R8500/9000/etc which are all DX8.1 cards.

If you wanted a few other benchies you can check out theGURUof3D which has alot of them. I think I'm going to go up and edit the review a little later (depends on workload today at work) to make all the benchmarks clickable to a place you can get a copy to try to benchmark your own stuff.

Also, it may be better to try and get a DX9 card to do a Det. example simply to have a good DX9 comparison since I picked most of the benchmarks to be more DX9 centric, the only 'only DX8 benchie' is 3Dmk01 just as a standard reference.

Damn...crazy little card for only DX8.0...oh well, it runs most of the games I play with decent alacrity. Anyway...now that I know that--I agree that doing a gross benchmark test would not be a good idea.

I asked around my dorm to see if anyone had a 5X00 graphics card--nobody cept a laptop owner who had a 5650ultra (maybe not ultra--I forget), so that really isn't worth my time since I can't bring it to my computer. Oh well--no DX9 testing for me...at least not until R42X and NV40 (BTW, thanks for clarifying that situation for me--I just hope that I'll get a new mobo/cpu/ram with that).

Damn Rambus.

I haven't had time to update the comparison charts. BEen busy non-stop since about November. Anywhooo, instead of leaving nothing I've decide to add the list of Catalyst reviews for the most recent drivers (Thanks to Wusy for his contribution);

**EDITS**

Feb 16 '04 Fresh Start: Some Win 2K benchies to get an idea of OS differences. Add 2 OpenGL benchies (DroneZ and GLExcess) since Vulpine crapped out with the latest drivers.

Feb 29 '04 New XP Benchies (Oscar Night, BillyCrystal his usual Best, Lord of the BlingBling rulz them all): Added CodeCreatures to the DirectX benchies, also continued with the new OpenGL benchies. Benchies still low compared to OLD BIOS (F5) and before latest MS patches, but this is the way I will run it day to day so that's the way it will be for the comparison, as long as it stays relatively consistent.

Mar 11 '04 Well the new CAT 4.3 drivers live up to their claim in PS 2.0 in 3Dmk03, and if you look at the heavy PS2.0 Rthdribl it also had a significant boost. Elsewhere some boosts some drops. A drop in 3Dmk01 and Aquamark3 (ATI says the increase is in higher resolutions [which aren't part of the FREE demo). More this weekend hopefully.

Mar 14 '04: Added the Catalyst 4.1 and 4.2 driver results to the list. I was hoping the OMEGAs would be ready by now, but unfortunately not. Does look like the PS2.0 performance increase is real in Cat 4.3. Now off to watch the Sopranos.

Mar 22 '04: Added Omega 2.5.30 (based on Catalyst 4.3). We see once again that the Omegas greatly improve the results in the GunMetal benchmark (still don't know why), and that the Catalyst 4.3 based drivers increase the PS2.0 performance in 3Dmk03 and Rthdribl.

April 08, 2004; The OGL marks dropped a bit in both tests. PS 2.0 stays pretty high in the advance shader tests.
A combination of performance improvements and decreases. IQ and wuality/sability seem to have stabilized with good set.

April 18, 2004 (Leafs lose a close one to the Senators in overtime 2-1): Added the latest Omega drivers (second generation 2.5.36b), see the typical increase in GunMetal, but nothing spectacular anywhere else. Definitely will be replacing/omitting the CodeCreature benchmark in the future.

June 20 '04 (Fathers' Day): Added the Catalyst 4.5 results, going to add the Catalyst 4.6 tomorrow, and hopefully the Beta 4.7 if time permits. I replaced Codecreatures, which gave me the exact same results as always, with SpecViewPerf 7.1, I may add UT2K4 too, I'll have to check the benchmarking while at work.

July 12 '04 (Paul Tracy penalizes himself out of the Molson Indy): Added the Catalyst 4.6 and 4.7 results. Nice boosts in Rthdribl, which I can't explain. All in all the typical, some increases here some drops there, nothing major except for rthdribl. I kept and eye on the 4.6 and 4.7 runs of 3Dmk03, and while there was sone slightly more sparkly artifacting rock walls, my Troll Lair didn't have the major artifacts others have had The warrior girl head look like it had a receeding hairline for a second but that may have been shadowing didn't check that enough in first round with 4.6s. SpecviewPerf sees some minor boosts/change so I will keep that as the replacement for CodeCreatures. After trying a few I still couldn't find a good UT2K4 benchie (one keeps asking for CD Key and the disk is already in the drive!). I will look some more and add benchies individually if I find a good one.

Sept 12 '04 (Denver Broncos pound KC, and Quentin Griffin makes people say 'Portis Who?'): Updated the benchmarks with the official 4.8 and 4.9 Catalyst drivers. Some nice boosts in 4.8, but 4.9 seems to drop down a bit. I have a feeling this is largely due to the .NET infested new CatalystControlCenter which I think I will remove and try the version without the CCC and see if there's a difference if I can get the time. Hate F'in .Net too, why ATI, why MS .net crap?!?
Added SP2 to XP in between the beta 4.8/4.9 and now.
Also added official runs with the Doom3's benchmarking tool, nice having anothe OGL benchmark, but unfortunately the results, like the beta don't show much difference.
Also watching PBS' Video game documentary while writing this update.

Oct. 03 '04 [Broncos squeek past Tampa], Added the Catalyst 4.9 drivers with original Control Panel, without '.NET' as well as the Omega 2.5.90 drivers (based on 4.9). Also added 3Dmk05 results. The Omega 4.9s has some interesting problems; halfway through test one of GunMetal they locked up with looping audio, 3 attempts failed. While running GLExcess in test 2 there was a strange white square halo around the benchmarking area about 1 inch thick that was flashing the entire time, other tests were fine. In the end it seems that without the bulk of .NET and CCC the 4.9 drivers with just the contorl panel were fastest, as one might expect.

And that is the story thus far.

More updates to come.

I focused my attention on football mainly.
All of this was done during commercial breaks, see there is a use for them. And just think I was also skippng a few chances 'cause I had the P-I-P going with the TOR-MTL (CFL) and SD-MIN (NFL) game on at the same time so I was still stuck to the game.

Thankfully I also have remmemberance day off work too.

I was going to go skiing, yes the hills (well Hill - Lake Louise) are open. But I've gotta go visit a few people in town.

I may add the OMEGA driver (just released) results tomorrow night.

I was also thinking of adding another OpenGL test, but that would require going through each driver again. I'll see what time I have, maybe next weekend during Hockey night in Canada (commercial breaks are shorter for hockey though).

You are a shining example to modern man!

Watching the footy, drinking beer and benchmarking for the greater community.

Is there nothing you cannot do?

Ya' man!

Just waiting for you to get an FX5700 to do a companion test.

Drinking a Kokanee (BC beer) right now. Just going to install the Omegas for tomorrow's INSTALL-ment of the benchies, which I'll add to the original post.

BTW ape, I updated to the 3.9s and no fastwrite issues for me still, FYI.
Like I said it would be worth investigating if its a VIA issue or something like that.

The 3.9s work fine for me so far (ran 3dmark03, no change).

Maybe I just had a bad load of the 3.8s.. but then again maybe not hence the fast 3.9 release.

ATI is starting to make me feel pretty good, I was a 3dfx fanboy and when they went under I wanted to go ATI for obvious reasons, and they generally have better IQ/features. But the performance gap was substantial at the time. So I bought their TV wonder just to see if they had improved since the last time I'd owned ATI... was certainly let down!
ATI has certainly came a long way since even then.

I just tell it like it is and some can't handle it. If your experience is different, well congratu-fukulation.

For those of you wanting to know how the new cat9 drivers do on a higher end setup, I used the omega 3.9 drivers to see how different they are. Heres my results.

2500XP @ 2.4ghz + 9700pro @ 371/337

3dmark 2001se
omega 3.4 17,940
omega 3.7 18,170
omega 3.9 18,210

3dmark 03
omega 3.4 5,606
omega 3.7 5,622
omega 3.9 5,625

I decided to go back to the omega 3.7's because for some reason my 9700pro artifacts at 378 using the 3.9's instead of 387 on the 3.7's.....
