Drive letters not appearing in my network when using VPN c..

I frequently connect to my work network using a VPN connection. I map to the
drives on the work network using the IP address and they do appear in the
tools drop down list of drives but the maped drives do not appear in My
Network Places and they are not available from the applications (Wod, Excel,
etc.).
