My CD/ROM has learnt a disappearing act and I don't know how or why. The bios
shows there is a cd/rom. When it is working there is an icon shown in My
Computer under Devices with Removable Storage and vanishes when it's not.
When it disappears, the Events Viewer registers it as an error, stating that
" The CD/ROM disappeared from the system without first being prepared for
removal". Rebooting the computer may or may not bring the CD/ROM back,
however, when using it,it will sooner or later usually disappear and will not
function. I have tried resetting the system to a much earlier date when I
knew the cd/rom was functioning ok but that didn't work. Drivers are there
even when CD/ROM icon vanishes from My Computer, and didn't get anywhere
trouble shooting. No viruses are present. I would be very grateful for any
suggestions. Thanks!!

start>run>diskmgmt.msc

Check the device is working propably, right click on the cd-rom icon.
One solution is to uninstall the cd-rom drive, after restarting your
computer you will need your Windows disk for the files to install

Sounds like a hardware problem. Make sure (with the comp unplugged of
course) that the ribbon cable to the CD drive is properly seated both at
the CD and at the motherboard. Check the power connector to the CD too.
Just because BIOS sees the CD drive momentarily is no guarantee that the
drive isn't failing under load.
