My notebook's LCD is 1024x768. It scales lower resolutions up to this size using anti-aliasing, etc. I wondered if there was any way to simply get the machine to turn off the unused pixels (leaving a black band around a 800x600 or 640x480) screen, cos I really can't stand the look of the thing. I've seen this on other flat panels, but never on a notebook.

depends on the notebook you own.
I've got a Compaq Armada M700. I can switch between scaling and non-scaling simply by pressing the 'Fn' plus 'T' keys.
on my older Asus notebook there was a program used called 'expand' that was responsible for that.
you might check in your BIOS if there is an option. or you check the manual or call/e-mail the manufacturer.

respect!
