It's that time of year again folks, and Your buddy GW is at it again. This years victim was a brand new eVGA GeForce FX5700 Ultra, and the tool was once again...3DMark03.
The massive shootout between myself and the Great Grape Ape still burns in the back of my mind folks, and I was hoping to re kindle last seasons video card deathmatch. I thought that the 5700U might be up to the challenge, but DDR2 memory is a bit touchy it seems...it doesnt like being clocked to 1.20Ghz  My whole screen turns rainbow colored whenever I launch a game now
No worries though, the card is only three days old...unmodified...and purchased at Best Buy.
What should I do guy's?...get another brand of 5700U?(BFG) or get a BBA 9600XT with 3.3ns memory?
I appreciate the input, I will be making the exchange tomarrow after I get Off work.

Nope...Dawn and Dusk refused to run on my machine. All of the other NV demo's ran great though.
I think I'm getting the 9600XT.

OMFG!

I just got to this thread, and now regret every word of my last few posts!

Holy $h1T! Seriously that's brutal. Dude I hope you can return it, if not I'll send you mine once I getthe replacement in '04.

MY recommendation, well you know me. The ASUS R9600XT is sweet, but not availible near you. The R9600XT with 3.3ns memory has core overhead but CRAP memory room, and it's more memory limited than anything. The FX5700U is a nice card. The BBA R9600XT is no slouch, just not living up to potential (like me in my youth) the way the ones with better memory can.

I can send you benchmarks that show BOTH of the cards running at stock beating each other (yes they are that closely matched in many ways). The R9600 series I still think has the edge in newer titles. I was actually surprised that with the 3 vertex engines the FX5700U (compared to the 2 of the R9600XT) didn't do better in the X2 demo. Here's a recent review from HEXUS (yes they are a little nV-centric but it does show what I mean), it is an FX59050 review with some FX5700U/R9600XT reviews. X2 is VS 2.0 driven for it's DX9 qualification, yet those 3 engines don't give the FX5700U any advanatage, and they trade spots. Look at the Aquamark3 results too (the reason I challenged you there).

http://www.hexus.net/content/reviews/review.php?dXJsX3Jldmlld19JRD02NjI=

Now I could post a bunch of the R9600XT favouring reviews. The main thing is. If you are stuck with ONLY the BBA R9600XT vs a GOOD FX5700U. Then the FX5700U is a pretty good choice. But if you can get any R9600XT with better memory (even 3.0ns) then that would be my preference)

Check DigitLife and Beyond3D reviews. I know you (like myself) respect their reviews. The B3D is not for the FX5700U so much as to compare to your old R9500P. EDIT; oh yeah [H]'s FX 5700U and R9600XT are pretty good. I like the hystograms to show min/max.

If you need anymore. Lemme know. I have tons of reviews for both. I will do my very best to be as unbiased as I can (I try that normally anyway), but I will try and give just raw info, cause I know you, and I know I don't need to hold your hand on this one. Lemme know before 8am MTN if you can, as I'm in training at work all tomorrow, but will pop in when I can to chck/post what I can for this issue.

Seriously man I feel like a $hit now! Yes I'm a Smug Ba$tard ! OIE! FAQ! :frown:

BTW, let's not fry our next-gen cards doing this. Ok?

Grape, thanks for the great post!...your such a good friend  everything will be ok with me, I'm pretty sure I'm getting the XT. I'm off to bed now, and then to work, but as soon as I get home, I'll update this thread to let everyon know what I chose:)

You do realize now that you are coming back to the 'Ati Fold' that that's going to depress CoolS and a few others who thought they found their FX champion.

Looking forward to see what you find.

As for the post, No probs man! I was really looking forward to a detonator review to add to the Catalyst review. Too bad you didn't fry it AFTER that. Man you gotta time these things better next time.

Chat ya' later. If you get a GOOD R9600XT I will be very jealous, but I will still send all the best demos and benchies your way despite my inevitable resultant embarassement. And just think this time you don't have to plug in the Molex connector. Isn't that a first for you and a DX9 card.

Get another 5700 and have a benching comp with me? I start at 5,750 or so 3dmarks in 03.

That sucks dude. We feel your pain.

I recommend the 9600xt, but that's no surprise coming from me I guess. I recommend this based heavily on the 9600's superior shaders. Lots of DX9 titles coming up...

You've got to ask yourself one question: do you plan to play more Half Life 2, or Doom 3? :p

P.S. I would like to note that my system got exactly one 3dMark2003 point more than you did with the 5700. One helluva coincidence, but damned amusing.

Yea...I did. It's amazing how close the two cards score in 3DMark, and it's no coincidence. Futuremark issued a patch that disabled the cheats in the 52.16 Forceware drivers that nVidia has on their website, only a couple of days after the patch was released, nVidia leaked another driver that once again bypasses 3DMark's anti cheat mechanism, that driver was the 53.03....and thats the driver that I had purposely been using to benchmark my 5700U  I tried to play fair and use the 52.16 FM approved drivers but the best score I could get without cheating was 3,792
My 9600XT is a neat little card, it looks identical to the ones on the review sites, and the image quality is crystal clear....I really notice the difference going directly from one card to the other the way I did. Using AA & AF takes less of a performance hit on the Radeon, thats for sure. I really liked the 5700U, but it was too fragile for my irresponible ass, and the famous nVidia "mip transitions" were still very visible to me, those who have owned nVidia know what I am talking about.
Before too long, I'm sure I'll go after Grapes score with a gumption...especially if I can get my motherboard replaced and up my front side bus speed a little. This has been a fun last couple of days for me, I got to play with two new cards...and it aint even Christmas yet:)
