" The Nokia 6255i phone is designed to meet Bluetooth Specification
1.1, Handsfree, Object Push Data, Generic Access, File Transfer,
Headset, Serial Port, Lap Top and Car Kit profiles."
Will these allow me to use the phone as a modem with my Palm and/or
laptop for mobile internet access? I don't see the "Dial-Up
Networking" profile listed, but I don't know what the "Lap Top"
profile is.
Motorola's documentation seems to include the "DUN" I'm expecting to
see, but the phone is about twice as expensive.

I don't know whether the phone provides the support you need but even if it
does, you need to make sure the Palm will recognise it and play ball too.
According to the latest release of the Palm Phonelink software there is no
mention of the 6355i. See below for currently supported list.....

Oops - I meant 6255i.

I don't see AllTel listed on palm's website either, only Cingular and
T-Mobile. The former has terrible signal at my house and the latter
isn't available in North Carolina. So, generic Bluetooth DUN profile
support on a phone is NOT sufficient for the palm to access the net?
Is it correct to say that I'd need phonelink to support both the
particular model phone AND the wireless provider in order to get
access?

I suspect the wireless provider may be irrelevant, unless the provider
botches the phone's firmware in some way. I have a Sony Ericcson T68i and
there is a Phonelink profile for that phone and it works great for any links
between that and my Tungsten T3. But when I got myself a Samsung D500, with
bluetooth, it was clear that it and the T3 would not work so well. I could
get a dialup connection working OK for web browsing but the SMS program on
the Palm would/could not exchange SMS messages the way my T68i could. I've
since returned the D500 and am still using my three year old T68i quite
successfully.
I remember when the Nokia 6230 was released that people were moaning that
they couldn't get it to work with their Palms. That phone is now supported,
it appears, but I don't think you can take it for granted that a phone will
work OK without trying it yourself or finding someone who can confirm
success.

Yes, with the Serial Port Profile.

It may be a typo, "Lap Top" instead of "LAP" (LAN Access Profile). Note
that the LAP is deprecated and is being replaced by the PAN profile.
