If they are the same price then check whether its a labeling error or not. Usually the added memory costs quite substantially. I saw a difference of $150 for the 9800XT

It's possible that the 256MB card uses cheaper RAM. This is often the case, but I didn't expect to see it on an XT card.

If it is using cheaper memory there is a good chance its performance will be worse than the 128M one. Depending on how long you want to use your 9600XT it may or may not be worth it. I'm planning to use mine for about a year tops so I don't bother with the additional memory. By the time I'm gonna need it, Í'll have a new card.
