I have a P4 2.0 Ghz running a GF4 Ti 4400 card. I play fps games like Halo, BF 1942, and Call of Duty, and output recorded shows to TV. So far games are pretty good at 1028x768 (I play Halo at 800x600, no specular effects). TV output is not the greatest.

My question is would it be worth it to upgrade to a Radeon 9800 Pro? Will I see a big difference given my slower processor, or should I wait until I upgrade my system? (probably when the new Prescott chip and new chipset comes out) I guess if I get 1 1/2 years out of it with better TV output and play all games at a higher res. I would be happy.

Thanks for your input.

If you're gonna wait for Scotty and the new LGA chipset, wait for either the nVidia NV40 or ATi R42X.

I also have a Ti4400, and I think it's pretty kickass for DX8/7 and OGL. I feel that there is no need, considering the lack of games that use DX9, to upgrade to a card that doesn't get a lot of DX8/7 and OGL performance gain (but DX9 is sweet).

Also, R42X is supposed to be twice as fast as the 9800Pro (no word yet on the performance of the NV40) and should come out at the same time as the new chipset for Scotty (Scotty will come out Feb 2nd, expect to find it in stores late Feb). So it still makes sense to wait.

Your Ti4400 is still more than capable...I'd recommend keeping it. If you want more performance, you might want to try OCing it, I got mine almost up to Ti4600 levels.

Damn Rambus.

if it was me waiting, and the new card was only gonna be twice as fast. I would wait until march or april and look at the price of the 9800 models. I'm betting twice as fast is depending on what benchmarks you look at. patience my friend, will get you a lot further when dealing with tactics like those that are currently dominating the pc market.

Bide your time. 9800 Pro isn't worth the money until direct X 9 games hit us. MMM... HL2.

I spend my time here hoping that one day I might learn something.

The only reason to upgrade right now would be that you are a big Antialiassing/anistropy fan. If use those heavily, you will see a massive leap over your Ti4400 performance.

Otherwise, wait until DX9 titles are out that NEED something like the 9800 to run properly.

The difference you'd see going from a Ti4400 to a 9800/Pro would make you crap your pants. You cant even use AA with a Ti4400 worth a darn in a modern game, not unless you dont mind dipping into the 20's as far as frames per second go. In the last three weeks I've gone from a Ti4200>FX5700Ultra>9600XT>R9800,If I was you I would upgrade.

Thanks for your input, everyone. I will hold off for now (hopefully I can resist the temptation). Perhaps I will try a little overclocking instead.
