Hello. I have an athlon xp1800+, 512megs ram, and a geforce3 ti500. I just want more performance on the stuff i play now (ff11, c&c generals, bf1942).

I'm wondering if upgrading to an ati 9800 or nvidia 5900 would bring a worthwhile 3d performance increase. I am planning on building a whole new system soon, but will probably wait till around doom3 or halflife2 release dates.

Also, is it possible to just swap in a faster processor? would my 266fsb be too slow to be worth it? (via chipset) Thanks for recommendations.

ok, also just to clarify, i'm wondering if the speed of my processor and fsb will limit the speed of the new video card making it not as worthwhile an upgrade. thanks.

Everything limits everything, but your old card is so outdated that a new card would give you a huge performance increase regardless.

New video is definitely what you want. I had a 9800 Pro running on a 1800+ 512 MB DDR and it ran great. I didn't get the same fps in Q3 640x480 as a P4 3.2, but I did get very similar fps at high resolutions and qualities on more demanding benchmarks.

The 9800 will run both doom3 and hl2 with no problems at good res/quality settings.

Besides, when you build your new computer, just put the 9800 in that, and the ti500 back in this one.

Thanks, this is just the response i was looking for. ;)
I wanted to hear from someone who tried the actual configuration I was going for.

If you are experiencing lag when the action occurs then no it would not. But if the games lag all the time even when there is no action then it would.

Well I just ordered a 9800 pro. :-D Can't wait till it gets here now. I paid $290 with free 2 day shipping... is that a good price? Seemed ok but I didn't search all that hard.
