Hello,

I am currently deciding between going with the 9600 XT or 9800 PRO 128. Here is my current rig:

Intel P4 2.8ghz
512 DDR pc2100
300 watt psu
2 WD HDs with 8 mb buffer

Anyway, my first question is what is the minimum wattage needed for the 9600 XT? I am sure I'd have to upgrade my PSU if I go with the 9800 PRO, but unsure about the 9600 XT.

Basically, I'd like to have this system last me a year and provide for adequate gaming. Provided my PSU can handle the 9600 XT, I will probably just go for that. If not, I will probably jump for the 9800 PRO.

I'd have to say that one strike against the 9800 Pro is that I am not all that hardcore a gamer (At least not for shooters - although I am very interested in mmorpg gaming). While I am interested in HL2 and possibly Doom 3, I am guessing a 9600 XT would be enough for adequate enjoyment. And I guess a free coupon helps the 9600 XT as well.

Ah, I am a muddled message board writer. Sorry for that... I just ramble.

So anyway... is 300 watts sufficient for the 9600 XT?

Captain Obvious says don't neglect the future. A R9800 Pro will remain compeditive alot longer than a R9600XT!

As for your PSU, The captain reccomends a 350W quality PSU or better for either the 9600 or 9800! And by quality the captain means not the cheapest box with a 350W sticker slapped on it!

Antec, Enermax or Fortron is what people in these forums recommend.

You are buying expensve components, dont risk them with an average PSU!

Oh, that is a good point.

Argh, went from a $200 upgrade + free half-life 2 over the past week to a $424 upgrade minus half-life 2. :D

I think I will pick up:
Sapphire 9800 Pro 128
Antec 400 watt PSU
Kingston 512 pc2100 ram

That looks like it will hold me over for a quite a while.

Very good choices for an upgrade there. Kudos!

Although looking at the subject of this thread I was expecting something much more adult-oriented...
