Now, before you go laughing at me for not knowing this, let me just tell you. I run a business that builds PCs, not servers.

Alright so I want to set up a cluster. IE, a bunch of computers put together with combined power to act like one.

How the HELL is this done, I have no clue. I am smart so don't give me all the basic crap. Thanks.

Here's some documents to read:

I'd flame you, but it's been so long since I've watched 'Full Metal Jacket', that I've forgotten how.

Can't win2k server use 4 computers, clustered?

Reply to ejsmith2

I think I heard that somewhere, but I wouldn't know where to start :)

Plus linux works great on mediocre hardware (just give it some RAM), and all the relevant software is free. That can't be said for W2K.

PS. Constructive conversation is always welcome (*nix vs. winnt)

"What's your NAME, Private? ....."

As far as I know its called a Beowolf cluster
and I read about it quite enough as i wanted to make
such a cluster, i think it works with Linux,Windows
there is some kind of a set of APIs that knows how to use the Nodes, this means that the software must support it as far as I know there is only software for Linux/Unix thats support this. search beowolf in nasa or something.

Ok thanks all.

From now on when someone asks you how fast your computer is, tell them your benchmark scores.

So according to some of those sites, the only costs are the computers themselves? Cause I can get a bunch of 486's possibly for free.....

Aside from the computer and network hardware, all the software will be free. Just get your favourite linux distribution, and when installing it, select the clustering option to install the Beowulf software

I have used linux on 486's before, but you really need 32MB RAM or more to make it less painfull. Just remember to fine-tune the system for optimized performance - dissable all unused services, build a custom kernel, etc.

well i am going to collect a bunch of 486s and pentiums and stuff. the main computer will probably be a P233 or maybe 333 with 128MB of SDRAM.

Maybe I can set up a SETI program in my community..... have people donate all the stuff and we can run SETI on the cluster. sweeeeeeeeeet..................

Seti don't run in such a way, you will have to run on each computer sepperatly.
But RC5 does uses Nodes.

sweeeet I didn't think SETI could do that.
