I removed peopleonpage and approposmedia spyware through spybot but was
still having problems.A webpage told me to remove items from the
registry manually, but the only thing I had that they listed was hkey-
local-machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run so I deleted
the autoupdater entry in that section as instructed. The popups have
stopped but now when I click a shortcut, it takes 20 seconds to a minute
for programs to load. Reboots fail and I end up having to turn the
computer off without shutting down. I know you've heard it before but I
swear I didn't touch anything else in the registry!!

Maybe you can consider doing a repair on fresh install of window.

Also, I thought about doing a system restore, but wouldn't that put
me
right back with the junk causing the popups?

"A webpage told me" - FFS?
Why not stick to approved sites?

Have you tried system restore?

Ok, I did a system restore and now all programs load as fast as
before,
but...I've now got the popups happening again. Also, when I try to
delete autoupdate.exe and libexpat.dll as well as the autoupdate
folder
in Programs (this is the spyware) I get a message that says another
program is using the file or the disk is full and therefore I cannot
delete them.
