FX5950 from XFX sounds like a vacuum cleaner...HELP
I just got the latest Nvidia FX5950 card but this sounds like a vacuum cleaner..althoug the temp is cool only 39c
How can i change the FAN speed to lower, there is no connector on the card and the software dont have any fan options....Is there a utility out there that can help me lower the noiselevel???...and any recommendations to cooling this monster card that already taken up2PCI slots...???

Several reviews have said that the reference 5950 cooler is very quiet. Do you have anything to back up your claim, or are you just spewing anti-NV bs?

The fan installed on the NVIDIA reference card is pretty wide in diameter compared to that of the one used in FlowFX, and rotates at lower speed. As a result, the cooling system of GeForce FX 5950 Ultra works much quieter compared to FlowFX and even noticeably quieter than a standard cooling system used on NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900 Ultra.

Several reviews have said that the reference 5950 cooler is very quiet.

That quote in your previous post is comparing two cards both from Nvidia. It's comparing to the cooling system that was 77db and sounded like a small orchestra on the 5800 ultra, and was still noisy on the 5900 ultra as far as I'm concerned.

I haven't heard of these cards being refered to as "quiet". Even the ti4600 is relatively noisy let alone the 5800 ultra, 5900 ultra, and 5950 ultra.

Granted, some people can put up with more than others. For example, if you yell very loud in my ear I'll get upset, but if you yell in my deaf dog's ear she won't care.

Even in Toms review I can't get a feel for how "quiet" the 5950 is.

Indeed, the 5950 is quite reminiscent of the 5800, at least visually. Luckily the similarity ends there, and the new cooling solution is much quieter than that of the 5800.

That's not saying much. Once again they're comparing to the screaming monstrostity otherwise known as the 5800. It's like saying that a Turbo Prop is quiet compared to a Jet Engine as far as I'm concerned.

These fans run slower in 2D and then pipe up for 3D making them noticably noisier. I'm not even going into the fact that the fan weighs more than a pound, the card isn't as good as the competition, it costs more, it takes up 2 pci slots, the cheating controversy, etc etc.

Ok, here's an ATi to NV comparison:

The good news is, while this is the fastest GeForce FX 5900 series product yet, it is also the quietest high end board from NVIDIA, we've had in the lab in a long time. It is nice and quiet in fact, on par with the R9800XT, while ramped up to its higher 3D gaming speed settings, but just a tad louder than the R9800XT when in 2D mode.
http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/geforcefx_5950u.shtml

And the card's size, weight, performance, cheating, etc. has nothing to do with the card's noise output being loud or quiet. I'm not arguing that the 5950 is a good choice at its price point, I am arguing that it is not loud.

re-read the above statement.......
"the quietest high end board from NVIDIA" this says nothing compared to ATI

"but just a tad louder than the R9800XT when in 2D mode"
just dont pump it up to 3D otherwise listen to it sing!!!!

reviews are crap....especially when the readers are either illiterate or incapable of being intelligent.

WHAT EVER!!!
Well the cooler still sounds like my vacuum cleaner and i still didnt find any utility that turns the Fan speed down!!!! It sounds like a 40 DB and then get higher to 50DB when you start a 3D game.
Is there any good silent cooling system out there for this Monster FX5950 Ultra card (you cant concentrate).
I would prefere a utility that can turn the fan speed down...preferable.

I hear all this about the 5900 Ultra cards being insanely loud. . .I do have to say that my Leadtek Winfast A350 is actually VERY quiet. . .especially from what I've heard in other systems. (Higher end cards) This IS a dual-fan card, but it's definitely about the quietest card I've heard from these High end cards. . .

(But sorry, don't really know of a Fan RPM Utility. . )

Rather than make stupid personal attacks, you should try posting a link to a review saying the 5950 is loud, sings, sounds like a hairdryer, etc. After all, if the 5950 is actually loud, reviewers would certainly be mentioning it. Until you can post some proof of this "singing" on the 5950 you are just spewing BS.

You also need to reread the quote I posted from the review. It says the two cards are on par when their fans are in 3D mode and the 9800XT is a bit quieter when both are not running 3D apps. I don't know how you got "just dont pump it up to 3D otherwise listen to it sing" from that.

Could find the wiring to the fan and hook it up to some rheostat but I would not touch it. Those cards have a lot of juice going through them that dropping the RPM is bound to cause some problems in a heartbeat. Could of been worse, could have bought the 5800 ultra. Now that one sounded like a c-130 on takeoff. Even if you switch out the HSF, you will have to put some serious cooling on that DDR 2 ram for they are running with alot of juice too..

Jeez, Focus Dude!

You're the one saying they are quiet while the AUTHOR of THIS thread says they are loud. You back up that they are 'Quiet' as you say. I can provide audio AND video of the cards and show you that they ARE loud, but the onus is on you for your delusive statement that they are quiet. They may indeed be, 'not as loud as the previous versions of the cards', but that does NOT make them quiet.

And comparing them to ATI depends on the card you compare to the HIS is significantly less noisy than other R9800 XT/PRO solutions which would then make it MUCH more quiet than most FX5950U boards. But then you could add into the mix and R9800XT Ultimate Edition or a Gainward Liquid Cool Solution and mess up the whole thing. However for the most part the FX5950 card is not quite, only '<i>quieter</i>' than previous models, and for the most part the R9800XT cards are louder than the previous generations, however it's still not completely clear which is louder outside of the reference cards.

Some people even find that the R9600P is more annoying because while it's not a high on the decibel level/meter. it's fan eminates a higher pitch sound/noise which cuts through the jumble of case fan white noise in the average case.

Wusy said:<font color=purple>Sorry buddy, that's how FX5950 are meant to be.</font color=purple>

to which YOU replied:<font color=green>Several reviews have said that the reference 5950 cooler is very quiet. Do you have anything to back up your claim, or are you just spewing anti-NV bs?</font color=green>

I'd have to say it's you who's providing us with BS, obviously you read more into Wusy's reply than was actually there. Sensetive are we?

After all, if the 5950 is actually loud, reviewers would certainly be mentioning it.
Reviewers don't usually mentions things that have come to be a given. Both companies have stated that they will need to move to big loud cooling solutions, so restating that the top FX coolers are loud is redundant. Few people have come to expect 'quiet' cooling from the top of the line reference cards. Read any review of the Ultimate Edition cards by Sapphire and you will see reference to both companies making loud cooling solutions.

This thread is about the FX5950 sounding like a vacuum cleaner to the author, and if we can give fix that.

<b>Sleeper_uk</b>, I don't know of any program that will override nv's choices for fan speed. Like Wusy said your only real solution (other than getting a different card) is to replace the HSF, and like W said that's not a simple task.

You aren't likely to find very quiet solutions out there. I have seen ONE passive cooling FX5900(non-ultra), but I don't know if they have the FX5950U setup like that. And a Gainward liquid solution isn't a simple answer either.

My suggestion, get a few case fans to act as white noise to run a little turbulence in your rig, it may lessen the noticeability of your card, but it will still leave you with a rig that is anything but quiet.

Of course that's just my two frames worth, as usual.

Actually if quiet is the goal not just any R9800XT will do (some reviews even show the R9800XT to sometimes be worse than some FX5950Us), the proper solution would be a Sapphire Ultimate Edition of either an R9800Pro or an R9800XT, IMNSHO.

However a Gainward liquid cooling system would give you great OC ability as well as quiet, but at the worry of leaks, etc.

All a matter of what one is willing to endure to acheive the desired results.

Tired of this nonsens...i went out and found a decent solution that helped me.
http://www.coolermaster.com
coolermaster has created the cooldrive 4 with front module to control the fans in your housing, so i attached the internal fan cable from the 5950 Vga Ultra card to this cooldrive 4 and VOILA!!! it has gone from 4xxxRPM (40-50Db) to 2xxxRPM(18-25Db)and the temp is around 33-38celcius THAT IS THE SOLUTION......

I''m very curious, did this new coolermaster thing you got give you the ability to view your rpm settings, adjust your fan settings, and see the tempeture? or did your card already allow you to view its temperture and rpm?
