That`s alot of money to spend for a small improvement. I wouldn`t.

I want to die like my Grandfather...in my sleep...not screaming in terror like his passengers.

It would be better for you to wait until Half-Life 2 and doom 3 arrive this april. And chances are prices will drop on both 9800xt and 5950 when newer cards arrive in March. 9700 is still fast. By the way what games bottlenecks your 9700?

I've been playing Halo lately and have noticed on several occasions that the frame rates are REALLY slow during heavy battle scenes, the same for UT2003. I am running them at 1280 x 1024, with the settings in the ATI control panel set to high quality. I do have the latest driver; 3.10. Am I expecting too much? Should I lower the resolution down to 1024 x 768?
My system is a P4 2.4G 533fsb with 1GB memory.
I know it's alot of cash to hand out, but if that will end the jumping so be it.
thanks

I never really experienced much slowdown in Halo. But I have heard many complain that it isn't too friendly even on high-end systems, so I wouldn't worry that it's your graphics card fault, probably just poor optimizing by the devs of Halo. You really won't notice much if any of a performance increase unless you play with AA and AF turned on. You'd get higher framerates, but because you shouldn't be dipping below 30fps now in any games now, you really won't notice any improvements. Stick with your 9700Pro for now, you probably won't even need to upgrade when HL2 and Doom3 come out because of the resolutions you play at aren't high enough that you'd benefit from a faster card.
As for Unreal, there shouldn't be any performance issues with your card, it most likely a software issue, try patching the game, or tweaking the settings because there's no reason to upgrade from a 9700Pro for Unreal.

I don't know for halo (haven't played it yet).

But for UT2003, i've been playing it on 1024*768@32-bit on High settings and all effects on. I think i'm getting 15-25 fps without any FSAA or AF using forceware 53.03.

Lowering the resolution to 1024*768 will help boost the frame rate and make sure FSAA and AF is of.

Hmmm... just a hint, i thought the 9700 pro was able to play Doom III at some acceptable frame rate last E3 2002. This really means that it can play UT2003 well above 60 FPS unless you play with 16-players and highest resolution and details.

Lastly, if you really want to get a new card today?
The ATI Radeon 9800 XT is the way to go, it has better hardware design than that of the Nvidia 5950 and also has a smaller & quiter fan. Although performance is almost a tie. But rest assured you that the 9800XT is DirectX 9.0 player.

Pc version of Halo is badly coded, even if you upgrade to XT/5950 you would still experience slow down. As for UT how high is the AA/AF setting? Either drop those setting a notch or lower the resolution a bit.

Are you wondering why you get such poor FPS in Unreal? If so look no further than your graphics card, it sucks.

Don't really care that much if i get low fps in UT2003, coz what i really play a lot is Counter-strike, quake 3 and NBA Live 2004.

I think i'll wait till H2 next year before thinking of any upgrade.
