Hi,

So I was recently hired by technology company. My current position is associate network engineer, working on LAN infrastructure and more specifically upgrading the network. new switches, access points etc... Since I didn't have enterprise work experience mostly small business and consumers they started me at 17/hr(zero certifications just my exp mentioned above).

Currently have CCENT and will have CCNA this month. I was also promoted to lead on the project(there are multiple same type projects my company working at the same time). I've been with the current company for 4-5 months and I was wondering if there is a chance I could ask for a raise based on my "new" certifications and my accomplishment(becoming LEAD)? What are your opinions and if yes what should I expect to get? If you need additional information please let me know. Thank you in advance for any input!

Before I answer, since this is my first time posting in this specific section of the tomshardware forums, let me lay out my credentials:

Ex Network Engineer, previous CCNA Cert and A+ cert, current IT Recruiter of 6 years in the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley with Startup and Fortune 500 companies.

Now, with that being said, based on where you live (your profile says Chicago, not sure if that's still accurate) and your getting your CCNA with a little bit of experience and promotion to a lead position, I'd say that asking for $20 an hour isn't at all unreasonable. Most CCNA's and junior network engineers make between $20 and $25 an hour to start outside high tech areas, and in high tech areas (silicon valley, austin/houston, new york, etc.), add $5-$10 more for starting pay.

Hope this helps!
