I just connected an external hard drive. So far everything has worked out
fine. I've reformatted to NTFS. The only issue I have is that I'd like to
be able to keep some files private on the hard drive but the box to make the
folder private is greyed out. Is there a way to prevent other users from
viewing my files on the external hard drive?

Windows XP Professional or Home?
(Do you have a "Security Tab" when you right-click on the file/folder and
choose properties?)

I have Home. I don't have a security tab. I have a sharing tab which has
the grey out box to make the folder private.

Hi,
You would have to set permissions to do that. In an WinXP Home system you
can use cacls from the command prompt, or restart in Safe mode where you can
access the security tab. You cannot do it otherwise. The option to make a
folder private will only exist when the folder is under your user account
(located in C:\Documents and Settings\<user_name> ).

Thanks. I went into Safe mode and did it.
