yeah, she seems like a bitch. But I don't care since I won't watch the show and I'm not sleeping with her. ..If only I could get rid of the commercials...

Our Aussie one is even tougher than the UK and American one

i guess they have taken several polls and the Americans don't seem to like her too much at all.
It doesn't look like she will be around too much longer.
I don't think i will ever watch that show again.

In the UK she does (or used to do) a TV Watchdog programme and a public opinion programme. Perhaps she thought she wasn't being mean enough. On a programme called 'Room 101' she made some slurr about welsh people, which got her into trouble. But I guess, she doesn't give a [-peep-] as she's gonna get a lotta money from the americans.

Well, sometimes the Strongest link does mistakenly get voted off by the unwise average. Thats what you've just done.

I'm with you, I watched it with a skeptical eye to see what the show was like and I liked it. The way she slammed the contestants instead of trying to build them up was amazingly funny. IMO.

That show is STUPID. I always considered the British to be intellegent people. So how on earth did that show make it so long? I can understand "who wants to be a millionare" because that's ok- BUT NOT "the weakest link". It's LAME!!!

U C the BBC is a 'public funded' organisation. They TAX us... sorry... I mean we have to pay a license fee to get that channel. In fact we have to pay that "license fee" in order to own a tv. Owning a TV without that license will get you a huge fine imposed by the Government.

This means, they get to put whatever they feel like on TV without worrying about viewing figures and thus what the people want to watch. Basically they have the final decision, dont give a [-peep-] about what the people want.

For example I only watch the BBC when they show 'Match of the Day', which is a programme showing highlights from the days football (soccer) games. But next season I think, that program is moving to ITV (a free to air channel). So, I basically will be paying about £120 (I think) for a channel I will most likely never watch.

Any good programme they show would've definately been shown on Sky a year before them. Any movies they show would've usually been shown on sky about 5 years ago and on some other terrestrial tv channel after that, then finally be shown on the BBC.

What an Outrage, don't you think...

That is BAZAAR! What is the reasoning behind licensing a TV??? I really am interested in hearing your explanation (honestly). What reasoning did your government use to make that law?

Also; Is it true that they drive around scanning for a radio signature from your TV to make sure it's legal? Someone told me they do that over in the UK.

Yeah, over here we have more of a media controlled government. Not the other way around. The media (CBS,NBC,ABC, AP etc.) tell us what to think (about the government, world events, how to vote etc.) and expect us all to believe and follow them like mindless sheep.

TV licensing wasn't made but actually existed since TV broadcasting began. The BBC says they are not restricted like the other channels, who have to follow what the advertisers tell them. Instead they can spend in making 'creative' programmes.

It is true that the license people go around with scanners to check if people have TV's. They first check the license database to find addresses that don't have a license, and then send people around to those addresses. They don't actually go inside the house but scan from outside, making it legal.

Thanks!

That's amazing. I think I would not survive long in the UK.
Cameras everywhere, TV licenses. Jeesh! Privacy is more than something you need when you have something to hide. It's a basic human psychological need. And the more someone knows about you, the more power they have over you (to abuse, manipulate, control). And government is based on power. Power is authority, and can be used for peoples good or ill. If you take away someone's privacy, you take away their life. Like in a prison.

Freedom is many times given away in the name of convenience. In this country, that freedom was bought by the blood of millions over the years. I hope we don't let it go easily!

So what was the reason for TV licensing?
I'm not sure that I understand.

You really believe that? If that were true I SERIOUSLY doubt that any news agency would have reported all the scandalous crap about Clinton, senators, and representatives.

Are you one of those conspiracy theory people?

Do you believe that Bush is "stupid" or a "bumbler"? If you do you probably have been believing them. Since they continue to say those things constantly. I'm not slamming you though, so don't take offence OK? It's just my opinion.

Yes they reported those things about Clinton. And then after a few weeks went back to admiring him. And I'm not saying that they always succeed in dictating public opinion. If they were, we would have Gore as president (Not to start another political debate). I'm not a conspiracy person. But the press are, with a few exceptions, almost 100% of the democratic party, liberal, and let us know it constantly by their biased commentary. A conspiracy is a group of people agreeing on something. The press usually agree. I would like to see them disagree more. That's all.

Note: To whoever reads this. No one has to agree with my above opinions. But if you don't agree, please don't start a lame flame war OK? Let's not make it personal. Let's keep it civil. I know we all can get passionate about our political views.

I agree with you. Only the american media would still be counting the florida election 6 months later in an attempt to make Gore 'win'. The funny part is that he lost by the orginal figure on election night.

As I recall ITV actually do get a subsidy from the license fee, but not a substantial amount.

I am still wondering if they can detect TVs or whether they detect TV tuners. i.e. if one has a plasma/flat panel TV or a PC tuner, or terrestrial TV over cable, what they can detect.

Did you know that the TV rental and sales shops will report you address to the licensing authority to say that you have a tv now?

When I lived in Europe I only had a broken TV that I used as a chair. The TV guardians actually came to my door and I had to prove that I didn't have a working TV. They're checking to see that every address is paying I think. Pretty lame.

R U sure about the subsidy. It doesn't say anything about that on the license it self.

They check for Analog Tuners. They can't detect you if you are viewing thru a digital tuner. :-))
