Previous user of this Samsung SPH-i500 PalmPhone swears up down and sideways he
did not enter a password; yet, after boot, one is demanded, and without it, the
PalmPhone is not usable. This is his third PalmPhone, and he's not a dunce, so
I don't think he's fibbing.

Tried all the customary defaults, no joy.

Hard reset takes it into the digitizer recalibration, and then back to the
password. Soft reset in the middle of the recalibration does not help. Firm
reset does not help.

An hour at the Sprint store with a tech I know to be well read on Palms resulted
in no resolution. They referred me to Samsung, who wants $65 and a two week
trip to the repair center in San Tone.

If anyone here has an alternative solution, I surely would appreciate it.

I'm weak on Palms, but I'll take a shot at it, if you haven't accepted
Samsung "offer".

What, exactly, does the prompt screen say that is asking for a password?
And does it appear to indicate the number of characters?

Those were, BTW, 1111 1234 2222 3333 4444 5555 6666 7777 8888 9999 0000 and the
last four digits of the EIN of the accountholder.

There is *1* other default that has been known to pop up (although more
so for "regular" phones and their lock codes. The last 4 of the owner's
Social Security #. Maybe you can have your friend try to enter that (I
know I wouldn't give the digits to anyone)?

I'm curious if you've taken it to a Service Center and had them reflash
the firmware on it. Even if you have, I'm not sure that this affects
the Palm side (which is, I suspect, where this is originating).

Let me know if either works (or worked, if you already did it).

This was a business phone. The EIN last-four (op cit.) were tried. No joy.

No joy. A tech who knew his Palmware tried. (Portland is knee deep in PalmOS
gurus and therefore, I have absorbed a thing or two. I quizzed him, and he was
no dummy.)

Sounds like it may be a phone lockout, rather than a Palm lockout. Have
you called your cellular provider about a lock code, or having them do
a phone-reset, as opposed to just a Palm reset?

Back up up the thread, I'd noted:

Is an article in the Samsung support site that states:

Q: My I500 Reset Because I Was Unable To Charge It. I'm Trying To
Connect With My PC And Synchronize My Data From My Desktop To My Phone,
But Its Asking For A Password. What Should I Use?

A: The password for synchronization of your i500 (unless changed) should
be the last 4 digits of your cellular phone number. It should only be
necessary to enter this password one time after that phone has been
reset. If this password has been changed since the phone was activated,
Samsung will not be able to obtain it for you; however, the password can
be reset. (NOTE: Before trying the following procedure please make
certain that you have tried all of the possibilities. Have tried 1234,
0000 or the last for digits of your mobile number. If you have and still
have had no success then proceed with the following instructions.)
From the Launcher go to the Security icon and click it. Now click the
Password box. It should say "Assigned." The box that comes up will have
a button labeled, "Lost Password." Click on it.
*****WARNING*****
This will cause you to lose any records that you have marked as private
records.
Click yes to proceed. You may now select a new password.

That does, of course, presume you can even get to the launcher screen.
And if you do, then it should be the last four of your friend's phone
number. And, honestly, this is what I thought you meant when you said
EIN.
