Help needed: Samsung SPH-i500 mystery password, can't clear

Previous user of this Samsung SPH-i500 PalmPhone swears up down and sideways he
did not enter a password; yet, after boot, one is demanded, and without it, the
PalmPhone is not usable. This is his third PalmPhone, and he's not a dunce, so
I don't think he's fibbing.
Tried all the customary defaults, no joy.
Hard reset takes it into the digitizer recalibration, and then back to the
password. Soft reset in the middle of the recalibration does not help. Firm
reset does not help.
An hour at the Sprint store with a tech I know to be well read on Palms resulted
in no resolution. They referred me to Samsung, who wants $65 and a two week
trip to the repair center in San Tone.
If anyone here has an alternative solution, I surely would appreciate it.

I'm weak on Palms, but I'll take a shot at it, if you haven't accepted
Samsung "offer".
What, exactly, does the prompt screen say that is asking for a password?
And does it appear to indicate the number of characters?

There is *1* other default that has been known to pop up (although more
so for "regular" phones and their lock codes. The last 4 of the owner's
Social Security #. Maybe you can have your friend try to enter that (I
know I wouldn't give the digits to anyone)?
I'm curious if you've taken it to a Service Center and had them reflash
the firmware on it. Even if you have, I'm not sure that this affects
the Palm side (which is, I suspect, where this is originating).
Let me know if either works (or worked, if you already did it).

Sounds like it may be a phone lockout, rather than a Palm lockout. Have
you called your cellular provider about a lock code, or having them do
a phone-reset, as opposed to just a Palm reset?

Sounds like it may be a phone lockout, rather than a Palm lockout. Have
you called your cellular provider about a lock code, or having them do
a phone-reset, as opposed to just a Palm reset?

No joy. A tech who knew his Palmware tried. (Portland is knee deep in PalmOS
gurus and therefore, I have absorbed a thing or two. I quizzed him, and he was
no dummy.)

0000 or the last for digits of your mobile number. If you have and still

a button labeled, "Lost Password." Click on it.

This will cause you to lose any records that you have marked as private
records.
Click yes to proceed. You may now select a new password.
That does, of course, presume you can even get to the launcher screen.
And if you do, then it should be the last four of your friend's phone
number. And, honestly, this is what I thought you meant when you said
EIN.
