After connecting cable check your network settings.
Are your network settings set to obtain a network address automatically?
Are you getting an address from DHCP?

If you are set to obtain an address automatically and you still don't, then the DHCP on your router is likely turned off. This gives you two options: turn on the DHCP to get an address, or manually assign an address.

Also check device manager to see if the NIC is installed correctly.
