I ended up buying that PowerColor 9700 Pro i posted about yesterday. i'm building a new Pc, and my mobo is a Asus K8V Deluxe. Inside the mobo manual, it says "If installing ATI 9500 or 9700 Pro Series VGA cards, use only the card version PN xxx-xxxxx-30 or later, for optimum performance and overclocking stability." Is there anyway I can check the card version without opening it? Its the Radeon 9700 Pro Evil Commando 2. Now I don't really card about overclocking--not my thing, but will it at least perform how its supposed to?

I don't know the answer to that. But...

Could you please tell me where you got that card in Canada so cheap?

Sure, I bought it at a local store in Markham, Ontario, called http:// www.computerlinksystems.com . Also, I saw you ask about the EVGA 5900SE for $257 yesterday, and thats one http:// www.tigerdirect.ca just search for 5900 and you'll see it.

I guess you could tell the store that your motherboard is compatible with a small range of 9700pro and ask them if you could open it in front of them to check, and if the card isnt compatiable maybe you can ask for replacement?

Crap! I wish I had read this post a couple of days ago. I just received an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro today. I sure hope it is a version -30 or greater.

In the event that your card is less than -30 and you tried it anyway, have you seen any problems?

I've got a (Powercolor?) 9500 pro PN xxx 00 running fine in my Asus P4P800 Deluxe mobo. Seems to overclock reasonably - had a wobbly 375/310 (with a zalman cooler) but I'm just waiting for a new psu to arrive as I think it was more to do with that (and the 4 hds, 2.8C, zip, cd etc). Wouldn't BSOD but would crash to 640x480 in 16 colours (yuk!) every now and again, even on screensaver. 325/300 is fine though.
