I am currently running a Geforce 3 Ti 200. I have been offered a PNY Geforce FX5200 128MB DDR. The rest of my system is well in spec for higher end games and im trying to figure out if this is a good upgrade for 80$.

Rest of my system:
ASUS P4G8X Delux,
2.66 GHZ intel,
1 GB DDR RAM
On-board sound (equivlent to mid-rng SB Live!)
460W Generic Power supply

Thanks for your help

If you can spend ~$130, then buy a Radeon 9600 PRO. Otherwise stick with your current card

Assuming hes in Canada seeing as hes saying an FX5200 is $80 which is about the same at stores where I am, then getting the Radeon 9600 Pro or the G4 Ti4200 will likly cost him close to or maybe even more then $200. G4 Ti4200, although cheap in the states, still go for around $210 in Vancouver Canada even though the Radeon 9600 Pro also go for the same price.

Yeah but he can get an R9600non-pro (not SE) for just over $140, and an SE for under $130. Even an FX5600 can be had for around $150. I guess it's just a quesion of whether or not the mediocre performance of the FX5200 is enough or if a slight increase in funds is worth it for a gamer. And if he is already running a GF3ti, it's definitely not worth the upgrade, because as others have said it's really a downgrade. Even an R9600Se or FX5600 would be a waste of those dollars IMO. Nothing less than an R9600 or an FX5600Ultra Rev.1 will show any noticeable improvement worth any money. And at that point, one might as well pay the little more and go for an R9600Pro.

So really the best bet IMO is to either save the money or spend more. But I think unless some game is really hanging the GF3, might as well wait for better deals or better choices.

But that's just my two frames worth as usual.

well I am in the U.S, to address that question above. The Games i play are Freelancer, UT2003, Planetside, and Im thinking about getting Final Fantasy 11. I cranked UT 2003 to 1024X768 and it averaged about 18 FPS during combat.

Thanks for your help everyone. I will concider another time to upgrade my graphics.

P.S. the Graphic card's fan is getting cranky - any way to fix/replace them?

The Ti4200 is about $180 over here in winnipeg.

Your best cost effective upgrade is the Geforce4Ti 4200, no question.

If you want something that will last you a little longer and deliver decent DirectX 9 on the cheap, spoend $130 on a Radeon 9600 PRO.

But like everybody says, stay away from the 5200 if you already have a Geforce3 Ti200. You won't see any difference.

Yeah I don't know what it is about GF4tis, but everywhere I see them in store and even retailers, I look at the price and guffaw. Yeah, sure $400 for a GF4ti4600, right! Even just under $200 for a GF4ti4200 seems like a wast to me.

The best, look at <A HREF="http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=8324&vpn=VCARD-TI4600" target="_new">THIS GF4ti 4600</A> @ NCIX. OIE!

Sure I'll take one of those over a new <A HREF="http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=10858&vpn=VGFX5700UG" target="_new">Gainward FX5700U</A> or <A HREF="http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=10273&vpn=SL-5900-FD" target="_new">Soltek FX5900</A>, let alone a <A HREF="http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=9776&vpn=100-435002" target="_new">BBA R9800Pro</A>

Nutz!
