Although the cards they mentioned are good choices, you did say you want to stay with NVidia. With NVidia I think your best options are one of the 3 following:

FX5600 Ultra
FX5700Ultra
FX5900XT/SE/LX

Top one is cheapest and the bottom one the most expensive. All 3 should be able to be found under $200 US.

Thats how much I paid for my 9800 locally. I would suggest you get a card with a 256bit memory bus...R9800/FX5900 series. There's a really big difference in performance.

If you can stretch your budget a drop you can get a 9800 Pro at newegg.com for about $240

Don't get a Nvidia card.

$200 budget. Yes the FX5900XT(se) fits your bill. But a Radeon 9800 Pro will blow it away and they start at under $230 now. I'd save money on the 9600XT or Splurge on the much faster 9800 pro.

two things: 1) you will still need to reinstall your drivers with the new video card.
2) radeon 9800 is my choice, overclock it if you're so inclined

Go with an R9800(not an SE though) or an FX5900 if you want something that will give you more long term pleasure, kinda like Sensitol.

An R9600/FX5700 would be ok but you may find that some things won't give you as many playing options with those cards. The Far Cry demo is sounding like it's an example of something that will stress the top boards so the mid-range boards may struggle after another 9-12 months.

Just my two frames worth.

I disagree with statement #1. If he already has an nvidia card with the latest drivers installes, all he needs to do is install the new card, and restart his computer, maybe twice.

How do I know this? you ask...because I just went through the same with 2 of different setups. One was a 1GHz celly that was upgraded from a GF4 MX440 to a GF FX 5600, the other was a P3-600 upgraded from a GF2 MX400 to a GF4 MX440.

Well, the 5900 SE looks like a good deal. I think it comes with Call of Duty, and it is a good card too . But if he can afford it, ATI's trade up program would work well. He can send in his card and get a 9800 pro for $250.

Anxiously awaiting prescott....is it here yet?
