Personally, I'd swap out the IDE cable, check the IDE controller DMA settings in the Device Manager, and do some testing on the hard drive with a downloadable utility from the disk manufacturer (while the device is isolated on the cable, and jumpered as such). I'd also install the latest chipset drivers for the mainboard.
Look in the Control Panel - Adminstrative Tools - Event Viewer logs for more information about what might be causing the error.
That's the best I can tell you without detailed system specifications and any extra information about the error.
