AGP x4 VS: AGP x8

Hi all

I am considering buying a new graphics card, my old GF4-TI4200 (128mb ram) is running too slow for the newest games. So I was thinking about the newer 5900XT card, but then I discovered that my motherboard (MSI ms-6380E) only supports AGP x4!
But will the card work in my AGP x4 and will it be reduced in speed?
I know folks used to say that AGP x8 didn't matter, but isn't that history by now?

Hope some smart guy can help out!

Thanks in advance!

0.001% to 0.002% difference in performance. 8 is twice as big as 4(the number not the slot)....that about it

My own beast: Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb) , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/370) , 512mb ddr400. SO MUCH faster than my last computer (pIII 550......)

Thanks for the feedback!

Have this ever been tested/reviews though? Links appreciated :)

And I can use my agp x4 mobo with this GF 5900XT right?

Search Toms Hardware, I'm pretty sure he's done some tests... look for the Geforce4 Ti4800 (which is a Ti4600 with 8x AGP instead of 4xAGP... no difference in performance)

Yes, a 5900 will work on a 4xAGP system.

Yeah, but aren't we back to what I started with "I know folks used to say that AGP x8 didn't matter, but isn't that history by now?"
I mean the 4800 is "old", how are things with new cards!?

some reviews and benchmarks were showing that the 9700pro in a 4x board was performing only up to 1% worse than 8x.
But of course you should want a new board with 8x just due to the fact that the new versions of graphics cards will support 8x.

As well an 8x card is compatible with a 4x slot.. so if you were planning on upgrading a Graphics card now and wanting to upgrade a mobo later on.. it's probably a good idea to just grab one anyways.

There's no friggen difference at usable settings, alright!? You want a review, fine: HERE. Keep in mind that that those are 9800Pros, your 5900XT is no match for them, so running 4xAA at 1600x1200 mostly isn't feasable anyway!

Maxtor disgraces the six letters that make Matrox.
