I'm able to configure my laptop to establish a wi fi
connection at a free wi fi hotspot (at PDX airport) but my
browsers Mozilla Firefox and IE don't connect - i.e. they
don't access any websites..

Any suggestions?

Either check for Proxy settins you have on and don't need....or proxy
