Slightly Disappointed =(

Well, I installed my new sapphire 9800 pro.
Its working- just not very well. I have battlefield1942 set at the LOWEST settings, I have the card set for optimal performance/low quality, and it is STILL choppy...

is this the fault of my card or my computer?

(I'm using a 1.7 Ghz, P4, 512 SDRAM, 60gigs of free HD space)

I'm going to try DLing the latest drivers but I doubt this will change much.

Any ideas / suggestions would be great! Thankyou

yes I did

I used a driver cleaner program and got rid of anything involving nvidia (did this while in safe mode after uninstalling the nvidia drivers via add/remove program)

Did you COMPLETELY remove the drivers? Just unistalling them will not do it, use a program like Driver Cleaner to get rid of the rest of the leftovers. Sometimes even Driver Cleaner won't clean them out completely, at which point a clean install of Windows will fix it.

Do you really think its old nvidia drivers doing this or just my comp limiting the performance.

Well...how bad is the performance exactly? And what card did you upgrade from? I don't think your puter would limit a 9800Pro THAT much (if all settings are at the lowest and you are getting bad framerates). No doubt you puter will limit you, but it shouldn't be too bad.

What is your 3DMark2k1se score?

IMO, your computer is limiting you in this case....Radeon's are not all that fast in low settings. In fact, Geforce FX blows them away at low quality settings. Radeon's strong point is at high res/quality w/AA and AF enabled where it blows the Geforce away. Since your computer wouldnt be able to handle those very high settings anyhow, you won't notice much of a boost...if you COULD turn on high quality settings, you would notice a HUGE performance boost VS old graphics cards and the Geforce FX.

okay, well then I am very disappointed because my people recommended I get the 9800 pro, I told them my system specs and that was their recommendation.

As for the performance, it gets choppy if I have view distance past 70% and I have everything else turned on low

While anything below a P4 2.4a or xp 2000+ will bottleneck your setup, I doubt it would be as bad as you make it out to be. Run a few benches like aquamark, and see what your results look like. Make sure that directx is working properly. 3Dmark 03 would be good as well.

Do a clean install of your OS for the best results. Anything less and you should expect less than perfect results.

Whether you install a new graphics card or a new motherboard it's in your best interest to do a fresh install of your OS.

bf1942 runs great on a R9500P and a R9800P btw. I've run it on a XP2100+ and a 2400+. Hopefully your 1.7 isn't a williamette, which runs horribly, but you should be able to get bf to run just fine.

Well, BF1942 is definately a CPU dependent game and the older P4's were very slow chips unfortunately. Out of curiosity, are you running the P4 with SDRAM or DDR? P4's run SLOW with SDRAM. BF1942 runs well on a Ti4200's, so the 9800 pro isn't causing the problem. I'd try lowering the number of AI opponents and turning the video settings back up to acceptable details. You need a fast cpu to turn up the # of AI opponents. Your system should be more than fine if those settings are adjusted. But forget the minimum system requirements listed for that game, as it definately wouldn't be enjoyable.

Edit: I see you have a P4/ SDRAM combo. The p4's never really ran well with SDRAM. You should still be able to play that game. How did it run before the GPU upgrade?

Ur 1.7G p4 is out of date.
the bottleneck is ur cpu not ur 9800p

There is no reason why the 9800 Pro- one of the fastest current graphics cards- cannot blow away BF1942 at the absolute highest settings. My GF4 was able to handle that game with ease, as the graphics are not that elaborate.. it's no Half-Life 2. Your computer isn't the absolute fastest around, but it's still perfectly fine for modern games. There is obviously something very wrong with your software- I've heard about people having this problem before, specifically when switching from nVidia to ATi graphics cards. Try reinstalling Windows. That should definitely solve the problem.

Whoa, big problem there. I get almost the same score as that on my 2000+/GF4 Ti4200 system. IIRC I think i got about 5000 on my CPU score, so that is probably what is holding you back. With that GFX card you should be getting anywhere in between 30000 and 40000.

I would definitely try a fresh install of your O/S, and drivers...I get 22,XXX with my old 1.1GHz Celeron (@1.5) and a Ti4200.

Agreed. IIRC, isn't view distance very CPU intensive anyway? I can turn mine up to 100% with a 2.66B and a Ti4400.

Yeah, but on top of it being a P4 1.7 400 bus chip, he is running PC100 or PC133 I think, and not DDR or Rambus. So it's about like a TBird 1.0GHZ, or at tops Tbird 1.2GHZ running DDR.

Can you run and post a link to PCMark2002 and 3dMark2001se scores. Might give us an idea of your systems performance as a whole and also if you publish the scores we can see more details about your system.

I just got a Saphire R9800 Pro this week myself and I am thrilled with it. I've been playing Unreal 2 at 1280x1024 max details, 2X AA / 8X FA and averaging about 80 fps.

Are you sure about your retailer? Are you sure you were sold the 9800pro not some SE POS? I don't know how often it happens, but it does happen...

I'm sure its this POS computer. I ran did another run of Driver Cleaner 2 for any Nvidia drivers, it found nothing. I also ran nasty file remover looking for nvidia, it also found nothing.

So I don't think its old nvidia drivers. Unfortunately I'm stuck here as I can't buy more ram for this system (and I don't have the cash for a new one)
