I've come back to this after trying (and failing) to get something useful
done with this device under linux - I now appreciate that synching, for
the time being at least is not going to be possible.
But I did understand that Drivemode would work with Linux, but apparently
not:
When I plug it in I get:
kernel: usb 5-3: new high speed USB device using address 21
kernel: usb 5-3: control timeout on ep0in
kernel: usb 5-3: palm_os_4_probe - error -110 getting connection info
kernel: visor 5-3:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected
uranus kernel: usb 5-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0
uranus kernel: usb 5-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1
when I switch drivemode on I get:
kernel: usb 5-3: USB disconnect, address 21
kernel: visor ttyUSB0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
kernel: visor ttyUSB1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now disconnected from ttyUSB1
kernel: visor 5-3:1.0: device disconnected
kernel: usb 5-3: new high speed USB device using address 22
kernel: usb-storage: probe of 5-3:1.0 failed with error -1
There is no new sd? drive and nothing gets mounted.
Turning drive mod OFF, causes:
kernel: usb 5-3: new high speed USB device using address 25
kernel: usb 5-3: control timeout on ep0in
kernel: usb 5-3: palm_os_4_probe - error -110 getting connection info
kernel: visor 5-3:1.0: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter detected
kernel: usb 5-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0
kernel: usb 5-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1
Searhing groups for:
"kernel: usb-storage: probe of" "failed with error -1"
suggests I'm (almost) the only person ever tohave this problem, so
probably doomed.

Most likely you are running a kernel that's too old.
I'm running Mandriva 2005LE (2.6.11-6 kernel) and drive mode works fine.
