AGP8X v.c. on 4X m.b.????

I need help in if you can put a 8X card like the 9800Pro on a Intel 845PE Chipset???? And what kind of performance hit would I get doing it???

You can use AGP 8x card in AGP 4x mobos without any problem.

AGP 8x doesn't have any performance advantage over AGP 4x

Thanks for that, because I was worried about getting stuck with something like a GF4 or something bad for HL2 and Halo.

I had a GeForce 4 Ti4200 with AGP 4x, and that card went bad and I got a replacement GeForce 4 Ti4200 with AGP 8x, and saw a difference in 3DMark 2001 from 10,300 to 11,100. So, in benchmarks it will make a difference, but in games, you will not notice the difference. After overclock of the AGP 8X card @ 300/600, I got 12,769.

Dave, if your old Ti4200 was a 128MB 4X, it had much lower memory speed than the 8X version, which has memory speeds the same as 4X 64MB cards. The slowest benchmarking Ti4200's are the 128MB 4X cards with the 444mhz mem clocks.

Vortex, as stated, yes you can use the 9800 Pro on an 845pe mobo. You really don't lose much performance because of running the card as 4X. You will however be losing performance compared to 865pe and 875 mobo owners. Not because they have AGP 8X, but because of the 800mhz bus and dual channel DDR.

Your performance will depend on you exact CPU and Ram. If it is a 533 bus P4, you will be fine. If it is a 400 bus P4 Willamette or Celeron, the R9800 Pro will not be able to be used to it's full potential. But at least you know your Video card is full DX9, and is not the bottleneck.

It's a 2.0A P4 with 256mb ram. But am thinking of dropping in a 2.66 with 512mb ram soon.

Pauldh, just to clarify things. The first card was a 64 MB card with AGP4x at 250/513. The new card is 64 MB with AGP 8x at 250/513. Same memory clocks, just different AGP rates. Thats right, I gained 800 points by having AGP 8x.

Same driver version? Strange. I have tested about a dozen Ti4200's and never seen gains like that unless the memory clock is higher. On one system I tested 6 ti4200's. All the 64MB or 8X ones tested within a couple hundred points of one another, while the 128MB 4X's with slower ram were about 300 below the slowest 64MB ones. I have really only seen 8X maybe add 100 3dmarks compared to running it in 4X mode. Good for you, 800 points is a nice boost.

Yeah. I think I used the 40.72 drivers or the 42.01, I forget. Also, I jumped the score to 12,769 after clocking the card to 300/600. Not that bad of a score for a Ti4200.
