I've had a bit of experience with linux now and i fancy installing gentoo (for a challenge). I'm a bit confused about the stages tho. should i download the stage 1 iso or the stages 1-3 iso? does the stage 1 contain all the same software but just uncompiled? as my modem doesn't work in linux i don't want to have to download loads more packages to get the same level of functionality

I downloaded gentoo not long ago and was amazed that the download itself was over 13 Gigs! It comes with so much support and packages that I almost shiot myself. Anyways, you'll have to decide which 'install' you want. It's like in windows where it has that Custom or Automatic install thing. Stage 1 allows total control so you can optimize it yourself. Stage 2 allows for you to skip the bootstrap session...good if you are happy with regular options and little customization. Stage 3 is a 'quick install'. So, there's a bit of info for ya. Each stage contains a full install...it is simply HOW it installs that is changed. If I were you, I'd visit the gentoo site and find out if they support your modem and if they don't, email them with that info. A good place to look is on the gentoo site in the forums as someone can always point you in the right direction. By the way, Gentoo kicks ass. I ran it for about 4 weeks (I like trying different distros of linux...one can never limit oneself) and thought it was great. I run Slackware 9 on my main linuxbox/router/gateway/firewall just because I'm used to it and it is my first box I ever built from scratch 4 yrs ago. Ok, enough rambling...hope this helps!

Buy an external modem on Ebay or your favotite PC shop. Its pretty much gauranteed to work with Linux.

If you are on dialup, I suggest you not using gentoo. Since you always need to d/l source to update your box, it can make that task quite tedious.
