Could someone give a rough idea of how long it should normally take to
transfer 1gig of data from an internal ATA133 drive to an external USB 2.0
or Firewire drive?

Many thanks

Even with overhead, certainly less than a few minutes.

Real world, you'll likely see 40-50 MB per second, so it should be under 30
seconds.

Thanks chaps, just timed it and it took 83secs from Internal to External USB
and only 30 secs between 2 internal drives.

Will try firewire and see how that fares.

There's a nice benchmarking utility at http://www.hdtune.com if you
want to test individual drives. Note that different implementations
of USB and Firewire can have radically different speeds, and neither
will match internal drives. While USB has a faster raw wire speed
than FireWire, IME it's generally quite a bit slower.

thanks William, connecting the same enclosure via firewire transferred the
file in 53 seconds which is quite an improvement over USB2.

Cheers
