I'm trying to clean up a XP-home machine that was horribly infected with
spyware and viruses.

I've been using Norton antivirus 2005 and Webroot's Spysweeper, and have
cleaned up lots of stuff, with an effort of several hours.

At this point, Windows explorer won't load. Other programs on the desktop
won't open, either.
I get an hourglass, and that's it.

Any suggestions on methods or more tools to use? I've tried reinstalling
XP's service pack 2, it made no difference.

Thanks,
Bill Freeburg

Try booting into safe mode, and then run your Anti Virus program again. If
this does not do it then go to http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/ and download
SpyBot S & D and Adaware to your desktop and then install, after
installation run the programs, if you are still having trouble go to
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ and follow the instructions, if after all
that try Highjack This
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/f [...] 258,00.asp and
then post to a forum and someone will help you out.

You can also run Adaware and Spybot S & D in safe mode.

Luck

Jim

Thanks Jim. These look like good suggestions.

Have you tried running a repair installation? Take a look here
for more info:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] US;Q315341

Keep in mind that you may have to eventually resign yourself to
the fact that the only way to get your PC back running right is
to do a clean installation.

Also, don't be surprised if Norton Antivirus doesn't run in Safe
Mode.
