Agere Systems ac97 modem

I had the same problem with a new laptop. After checking with tech support I
was told the problem was more than likely with a piece of older software that
was not fully compatible with Windows XP. Since I only had to "older"
software programs, I elimated them one at a time. Sure enough, the older
version of "Quicken" was causing the problem. I upgraded and my problem with
the AC97 modem driver went away. Hope this is helpful.
