I have a toshiba satellite M43 laptop that has recently started spiking from 1500 Mhz to nearly 8000Mhz, and random speeds in between, for a second or two and then drop back (according to HWINFO32). Why? What could possibly cause this?

Without more information my guess is that HWINFO32 is some how in error. Your cpu cant even run at 8 gigahertz at stock voltage much less with stock cooling. Although if some how this were true your cpu should have a thermal shutoff built in. Has your laptop been shutting off on its own lately or giving any warnings about temperature?

Yeah, I would have to agree with derekullo... Speeds like that take liquid nitrogen/helium to achieve. Maybe some sensor is damaged?

EDIT: Wanted to add: If your laptop were running at 8GHz and not switching off for some hellish reason, the heat would be probably be unbearable.
