Grabbing a common phrase for successions of kings, it appears tha nV will skip the first edition of the NV40 and instead release the updated NV40, similar to ATI forgoing the R400 for the R420. Here's what FUAD at the Inquirer has to say;

It appears that both companies didn't bring us product when they could for fear of what the others would bring, and instead we are stuck with the R9700Redux part 8 "return of the Refresh". If both had stuck to their original plans we likely would have had the R400 long before X-mas, and the NV40 sometime thereafter (Jan/Feb). Really a waste, and I hope they don't delay anything more, thus giving us the R500 as the next chip for next X-mas, and releasing and R9800ZX-twin turbo and the FX5990SUPER-ULTRA until then with 10mhz core and memory bumps!
Well I guess we should have seen this coming considering the previous thread about info from Beyond3D (and the Inquirer);

They won't have the NV40 and NV45 side by side, they will simply drop the NV40 and call the NV45 the 'new' NV40.
