I bought a Sapphire Radeon 9600 XT OEM from NCIX.com
Never mentioned reqs.
Today on another site I saw it reqs Win 2K or newer.
I have Win 98 SE.
Upgrade will cost me $160 =(

Will Radeon 9600 XT not work on my PC since I have Win 98 SE? What will happen if I plug it in?

Thanks.

I think you're missinterpreting it.

MS was to discontinue support for W98SE at the end of last year, and that's likely why it's not specifically listed.

As you can see from ATI's site;

<A HREF="http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600pro/specs.html" target="_new">http://www.ati.com/products/radeon9600/radeon9600pro/specs.html</A>

For the R9600 series ME is supported, as it is still current. However there are alot of people out there running the XT on windows 98 platforms.

No upgrade needed, but it's always a good idea if you can get it.

ATI has an WinME driver that works fine with Win98SE.

I've got a 9800Pro on 98SE, it works fine, and the 9600 & 9800 use the same driver package.

Just use the latest Win98/ME download from Ati's site (catalyst 4.3 IIRC) and you should be fine.

Maybe it's time to upgrade Windows 2000 or XP!

If you are buyig a 9600XT and you don't the CPU to run Windows 2000 or XP you will not get the most out of your new Video Card. And since Windows 2000/XP are a lot more stable and reliable than the "crappy" Windows 98SE, you should switch to it!

It's my recommendation.

Hey Rod, you wrote:

EDIT: I think I understand what ur saying, typo, you meant "if you don't have the cpu..." NM

See my sig, can you explain this statement to me please?

BTW, I've got a dual boot system ATM, with 98se and XP. XP is sooo much slower to boot etc. Haven't seen any stability improvement. I stick with 98se (but my rig is used soley for gaming, no encoding)

I don't understand why your XP is long to boot... My system take less than 40 second to boot in XP. From the time I push my power button to the moment XP is fully loaded (system tray included...).

I have a 1800+ oc to 2400+ and Seagate 7200.7+ HDD.
