Cingular Treo 650 and earthlink email

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I'm trying to set up an earthlink
account on my Treo. I'm getting email fine, can't email out - the mail
just ends up sitting in "drafts" or "outbox." I'm using
smtpauth.earthlink.net for my outgoing mail server, port 587, selecting
ESMTP, not selecting SSL (and the earthlink folks say all those
settings are correct). I do have an older email in the form of
user@ix.netcom.com, but I have no evidence that is causing a problem.
Any suggestions?
