A Student's Dilemma: gaming laptop or pc+netbook

Hello everybody,

I will be going back to college soon and i need a computer which can handle basic computing (browsing, writing papers ,etc.) and occasional session of BF3,Max Payne 3, Borderlands2, and other upcoming Fps ,at medium settings. I have to take a laptop to the classes and labs.

Is it worth it to get a gaming laptop for $1000 or should i get a netbook for $350-450 + budget gaming pc $600-700(maybe a mini-Itx rig)(already got a monitor and other peripherals).

I am really not able to decide between the two options, they both have their own advantages and disadvantages:

gaming laptop:
pros: power on the go, only one system to manage and maintain
cons: bulky, low battery life

pros: good portability and battery life, good gaming on pc
cons: have to manage and maintain two systems

Please help me make this difficult choice, I am certain that many would have faced the same conundrum. Thanks in advance.

500 dollar notebook and you can get a pc too :) one year warranty isn't too bad either.
  2. If you can wait, there is a third option: laptop with thunderbolt and eGPU via MSI GUS II.

A strong argument in favor of the Gaming PC/Laptop option.
Gaming lifespan/upgrade-ability of the PC is much also greater.

    HP Pavilion dm1z-4200 11.6" Dual-core AMD Fusion Laptop $350
Performance wise, falls between a 'Netbook and standard laptop.
