Cheers

Here's a few nice explanations (some with benchies);

Adrian Rojak Pot's quick (but good) blurb;

And a few tidbits from MadShrimps links;

You'll see some explainations, but ignore the formulas for determining what you need. I've found 128MB is the best setting overall, regardless of the rest of your system.

Do you think the 128MB setting being the best is true if you have a GB of ram?

It's not related to system RAM as much as it's related to video card ram, if memory serves.

I remember digesting some info about this a couple years ago. I thought if you have gobs of video card ram (128 megs or better), it was suggested that you set the aperture to 64 megs. For smaller amounts, set it to 128 megs.

Then again, that was a while ago, things might have changed. Or I might be remembering it wrong...

You're not going to use more than what the game calls for. I've found 128 gives me the best overall results on every system I've tried, from 128MB to 1GB system RAM.
