ati cards with letterbox mode?

I've been looking to buy an LCD panel, and it has come to my attention that "The ATI cards seem to have a feature which allows you to run 1280x960 for example in a letterbox mode rather than it appearing stretched." (960 for battlefield) However, I can't seem to find anything about this in the documentation nor am I having much luck with google searches. Is this true, and how would I use it?

it depends on your monitor but my radeon 9800pro + sony 19" lcd supports it
1280x960
