I have the 9700pro, well atleast thats what windows picks up. It may be the non pro. But between the two in the title, witch one is better?

Wow thanks for the speedy reply. Does the 9600XT support DX9 better?

no

the 9700 has 4 parallel shader "pipelines", while the 9600 only has 2 shader pipes

just about everything with the 9700 is superior to the 9600

Actually, Yes.

There is the addition of SmartShader F-buffer to the R9600/9800 series. And the XTs have better Hyper-Z compression.

Will it make up for having half the pipelines of the R9700 series w/ only 128 bit memory? NO! It's a HUGE difference in performance, even overclocking the core to near double the R9700's speed will not make up the difference becuase the memory will never be on par.

Depends what you mean by "better" though. Both cards will fully support DirectX 9, so the images they create will be identical... the 9700 PRO will be a faster card in the end, but the 9600 XT is working a bit more efficiently behind-the-scenes.
