Greetings!

I am upgrading the processor in my current system and will be upgrading the video card shortly. What card is best bang for the $ in the $200 - $250 price range? And, how much of a performance boost will I notice from my current GeForce 3? The system is an A7N8X Deluxe with an AMD 2500XP mobile, 1GB of 400MHz DDR RAM, Seagate 120GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Gainward GeForce 3 w/ 64 MB.

Thanks for your advice!

Bob

Go to ATI's web site and trade in your Geforce 3 for an Ati 9800 Pro 128MB for $199US. That is the best deal and you should see a pretty significant performance increase in gaming.

I'll third that, the 9800 PRO rocks this category.

Another vote for 9800Pro plus and advice: IF you don't mind to wait a couple of months, new GPU are going to market soon. Don't know if you are in a hurry or how well your GF3 runs runs your games.

Note: I have a GF3 too!

Still looking for a good online retailer in Spain :frown:

9800 PRO!!! It'll freakin OWN your GF3 HARDCORE! You should see anywhere between 5 and 10 times the performance with newer titles:) Also AA and AF will now be well within your grasp!

Me: are you saying I can't provide?
Me: cause I know I can provide.
Me: oh and I can provide money too;)
Rachel:): why do we need money when we can just stay in our room and have sex all day?

OK,

Well, the GeForce 3 is going to go into my "back-up/kids" computer so there will be no trading in. I am not in a rush for an upgrade but I think the 9800 Pro would suffice for a long enough time period. Besides if I wait for the next GPU then there will be a newer and better one coming shortly after that!!!!

Yup, there will always be a better card, but as soon as the 'next-gen' card gets released, it will have some effect on the prices of the current top-end stuff (e.g. 9800Pro/XT), so they should cost you less.

That said, there are some nice cheap 9800Pros out there if you look hard enough, and are careful to not end up with some crippled version. If you find what looks like a good deal, post back here and someone will be able to tell you if it's too good to be true or not so you can avoid them.

No trade in? No problem.

Go to your local computer recycling store or Ebay and buy an old Mach64 video card (or s3 Virge or whatever) for $5... and use that as your trade in.

What about 2 R9600PROs, so he can play head to head when friends come over? That way he also has a spare.

Just a thought.

Yet one more vote for 9800 pro. Either getting the BBA trade for $199 or an oem Saphire for $205 no trade. I am a built-by-ati fan for sure, but have found this Saphire 9800 pro as well as many 8500le's to be good cards.
