Can't Stop the Error Messages!!!

Installed SP2 last week and since then have been bombared with little Error
Message windows.

There were a few settings that needed adjusting, which I've seen to.

Now, I still get 'em in waves of 20 or 30 each time.

The messages read some variation of

"ERROR 008B423F The service cannot accept control messages at this time: $"

Sometimes the first letters/numbers of the code are different, but they
always end in 423F.

And there is no record of a problem in eventvwr.msc.

Any ideas/hints?
