I've been reading the Far Cry thread and it has come to my attention regarding 9800pro perfomance. Some users had to go medium detail in order to achieve good performance.

I believe the 9800pro is one of the most powerful videocards out there.

Shouldn't 9800pro users we be able to play the game at MAX DETAILS without any perfomance loss? (Note: considering good rig: 1gb ram, xp2800, nForce 2, etc...)

Well it stresses all cards. The biggest difference, the Radeons are running the game with PS2.0 shading, and the FX series is detuned to PS 1.1.

There is a patch to both increase FX performance with advanced pixel shader performance and to fix some AA issues, but no reviews yet as to what impact it has had. Also interestingly the patch supposedly adds PS 3.0 support, but what that entails isn't clear so far.

I'd really like to know why some are reporting lower FPS than others too(Vsync-AA/AF in control panel-Driver versions).
It really should be fine if you have 1gb ram, fast CPU, 9800pro using 1024x768.

Ya think soundcard/sound quality may make much of a difference?
Edited by Piccoro on 04/05/04 01:06 AM.

I'm running medium-high settings with my 9500 PRO, and it seems very smooth on my box.

Well on my AIW 9800pro (amd 2400+, 512 mb ram) it runs good (30-40fps) in single player @ 1024x768. (This game is much better than Halo in terms of frame rates as Halo fluctuates a lot.) Everything at highest settings except turning the setting to low on shadow (I find on many games it improves performance when settings are low) and particles to medium. in multiplayer it's 40+ fps I also set the aniso to 4 and 4x anti on the display tab.

the only complain is that is takes a while to load in between levels

I get 40-85 Fps with my 9800 Pro at Max detail... The thing I noticed was my Ram... With faster ram I would get much metter loadings ingame! But the Ati card runs it smoothly!

I run it on max details on 1280x768 and get 30-100 fps

It depends what you like. I like very fine details that AF brings. But max AF together with max shadows and lighting = poor performance. So i drop lighting and shadows down a bit and get 40-80fps 1024x768 2XAA max AF max everything else...

I get between 30 an 80 FPS myself, running everything high but the shadows set to medium, not sure on the AA/AF settings.

The game ROCKS.

Speeduk, you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference between 8x and 16x aniso in game, yet it makes a considerable difference in performance. Drop it to 8x buddy.

I don't understand why people would lower lighting/shadowing detail (unless they HAD to). That is exactly what the future of games/gaming is! That is what will take games to the next step of realism. It is key. The lighting and shadowing are quite impressive in FarCry (I have them at max). In the demo level, play around with the hanging shark carcass near the dock, and watch it's shadow. Very nice. Also the people shadows (but no self-shadowing, aghh!).

I run 8x perf. aniso in FarCry. The quality difference between 8x perf. and 16x qual. is very small compared to the performance difference!
