Well you know....I've been reading people's thought's on these leaked [H] pic's all over the net, alot of people are disapointed in the NV40's numbers, I know I am. I was seriously expecting it to be twice as fast as anything we have right now....It's almost a guarantee'd thing that ATi's card is going to be top dawg again. Wasnt it supposed to be twice as fast?....we need more reviews.

If u check settings, u'll notice the NV40's running at the next highest res compared to its competition, along with extra aa and whatnot. Also, do realize that when new tech comes out it has drivers to be smoothed and isn't there as much for insane speed in current games as support for later games...

Why is it that nVidia fans always say "ATi's drivers suck, and nVidia's rule"...but when an FX card doesnt put out good numbers, you hear stuff like "waite till nVidia put's out some good drivers for this card"....

Because when something hasn't come out yet, there are very few scenarios in which it has been used. When many people start to use it, the real debugging starts. The difference is that with Ati, it's the whole thing that won't work, whereas with NV it's 50% performance boosts that you'll get.

Replace "debugging" with "optimizing" or "dropping precision" and replace "50% performance boost" with "cheating lika a motherfcker"

It's great how you're looking at a single side of this whole issue. I don't even think it's worth the effort arguing when you're gonna focus only on specifics to hammer NV and not realize other things. Whatever man.

You said it man. In all honesty, I WAS disappointed by the numbers but (according to those benchmarks) it IS true that 6800 is still on average 10-15% faster at higher resolutions and double the AA and AF settings...
April 14, 2004 2:07:39 PM

Haha! Just read Firing Squad review. The only thing that can redeem 6800 is new drivers which DO fix AA IQ. Damn! Who cares about 50000 FPS if the image is ugly. Check out those F-15C screenshots. Ughh........... Unbelievable. Throw a new PSU in the mix and you get a loosing proposition... I am about to smarten-up and stop being an nVidiot that I am...

Stingy people end up paying double. One kick-ass rig that will go strong for three years or one half-good one every year?
April 14, 2004 4:24:08 PM

Am I not reading these reviews right or something? Most of them say the image quality of the NV40/6800U is right up there with ATI and the benchmarks are pretty amazing. I will hold off judgement until the next gen ATI cards come out, however, NV does look to give ATI a run for it's money in the coming year. This will be one fight for the books.

6800 looks noticeably worse than 9800 at the same resolution and AA settings. Period. Yes it it faster, but the only way it will look the same or better is if you crank-up the resolution. BUT this effectively reduces performance and alomst halves the frame rate and you get the same fps as 9800 which looks better at a lower resolution, so what's the point? I HOPE it is a driver problem and this will be ironed out before the card ships, but for now I am pissed and disappointed partly because extreme resolutions like 1600x1200 are often a bad thing if the a game includes text (Neverwinter Nights, for example, and other dialogue driven games) where text is hard to read if it is too small at hi-res and antialiased too.........

See the difference for yourself (link below)

I quote:

"Check out the horizontal stabilizer on this F-15C, specifically the left stabilizer, just beneath the “LN” markings on the tail. GeForce 6800 Ultra looks much better than 5950 Ultra here, although in this case we’ve got to give the AA edge to ATI. The RADEON 9800 XT does a better job of removing the jaggies, and doesn’t have the weird swirly marks found on the tail of the F-15C on both NVIDIA cards."

Oh, and DO check the RIGHT vertical stabilizer where it meets the fuselage! This kind of AA quality in a high-end "revolutionary" product which forces you to get a new PSU, motherboard and, possibly CPU + memory is unforgivable.

My (Ping knockoff) Square 2's have kept me happy. My drives still suck though. I hit a 5 iron 200+ yards straight with ease, buy my woods always put me deep in the woods. Argh! pro tees, no I don't want to play the pro tees. "Ironman" don't do them well.

A few nice days and now we turn to the links. Have you northerners even had nice weather yet? Guys NV40 just came out, stay focused. :)

Callaway had it right with the Big Bertha Warbird Driver, they never should've changed it. I have the 3 and 5 wood with the Memphis 10 shaft and I've been looking all over for the matching driver, I can't find it anywhere!

Disappointed, I'm just going to wait to see what ATI has to offer. No reason to upgrade yet.

Wow, lucky stiff, that's great!

That would have been me in college. I went to school in Indiana where golf is cheap and weekend tee-times easy to get. Now I'm lucky to play 4 rounds a year.

Yeah it's looking pretty good out of the gate. A few minor issues, but that's to be expected at launch.

With time will likely come more detailed info, and of course competition.

Either way the next generation was worth wating for for those recently thinking of upgrading to a new R9800XT/FX5950U.

Still waiting for more info, but looks good sofar.

EDIT: I wonder if we'd all be so impressed if nV and ATI both released their original launches (R400 and original NV40). Would the introduction of those intermediate cards ahve made us see a nice jump follow by a nice jump, instead of the apparent leaps we see here?

Just a thought.

Either way I guess we would've even up with this point of performance around this time (unless they would've stretched the R400 adn original NV40 out as long as the R3XX/NV3X series).

BTW, it's snowing here!

When I check the pro shops here I'll keep an eye out for a driver, just for the hell of it.
