where are the downloaded updates stored before they are installed
have tried to install ms installer v3.1 update multiple times and it
always fails

icon still remains the in system tray
have tried to disable updating that particular fix but it still wants
installed

can the update file be deleted?
have tried the directions at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;822798&Product=winxp
and it still fails

Updates are hidden files under C:\Windows. To view them, go to:
Using Windows Explorer>Tools>folder options>View tab>tick show hidden files
and folders. Click Apply and OK.
