Omega Race - Battery Replacements

I've finally got my Omega Race running reliably and would like to have it
saving high scores again. The battery was pulled off my board ages ago and
has it zero acid damage.

A few years ago there was a boardset sold on Ebay that had a 1.0 Farad
Capacitor replacing the battery. Is this the best way to go to preserve the
PCB long-term? If so, I've only seen them with a rated working voltage of
5.5v. The original Ni-Cad battery was 3.6v - would this capacitor provide
too much power to the board?

Here is a link to these capacitors in Digikey's catalog- I'm looking at
either P6976-ND or P6981-ND (upper left of page).
http://dkc3.digikey.com/PDF/T051/0873.pdf\

I've also heard about mounting a replacement 3.6v nicad battery to the
outside of the cabinet, or in a plasic bag - any thoughts about these ideas?

Thanks,
Timothy

personally, I like using a memory cell. no chance of leaking ever.
you can mount it right on the board that way, done for life.
you just have to turn on your game once a week for 30 mins. to keep a good
charge going.

otherwise, I recommend remotely installing a battery, if you go this way.
the nicad battery still has to be turn on one in a while to keep a good
charge going also. And the battery will not last forever.

or you can go with reg batteries in a remote holder, but you need to install
a diode, so the board doesn't try to charge itself.
change the batteries often with game turned on. so you don't loss your
scores.

Timothy,

I'm the guy that sold the board with the 1.0 farad cap.

My omega race has been running for years with no issue using the cap. Saves
the high scores as long as the game has been turned on periodically.

The cap will only provide as much voltage as it receives (charges to) You
won't have a problem.

Let me know if you need one, I have several left. I can put in a priority
mail box and send it. I bought several of them from a local electronics
shop. $1 apiece.

do a search on the pinball groups. Been covered to death there.
I have seen something on this before using a cap and a diode? to replace
batteries.
