Gateway NV53, Programs will not open.

I got my laptop yesterday and it came with Windows 7 and it was working fine. I turned it off last night and when I woke up I opened it up things just wouldnt open. I open windows media player and it would open but it would be non responsive and same with safari. It says the firewall and Norton is off and it doesn't let me turn them on. When I tried the recovery option in the security menu that wouldn't even open whats my problem?
