I know this does not exactly belong on the Graphics Cards forum, but overall system performance is essential for good gaming where VGA cards are the main component. These things are all related.

That said, I must inform you that the "Performance" sticky I started

<A HREF="http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=395280#395280" target="_new">http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=395280#395280</A>

is being constantly updated and I must admit that it is growing bigger.

However, I would like to ask you to review it from time to time and offer suggestions/corrections/additions. To make it easier to manage, please send Private Messages!

One of the things I would love to see is the continuation re formatting C: and reinstalling OS and stuff from scratch.

Please be assured that I have no intention of taking all the credit. At one point the sticky will have to be moved to a more appropriate forum, at which time aliases of those who contributed will be mentioned in the "credits"

Let’s do this. Personally, my "inspiration" came partly from the fact that one day I realized that I have taken from the Internet community more than I have given. I am simply trying to give something back and I am grateful to all those who will join me.

Preparation

Before formatting back up all of your data from every application you can think of to CD's or a second hard drive. In addition to stuff like office documents and *ahem* movies and pics, it's also a good idea to back up all of the files in your games' directories. This can save loads of time later for a game like UT2K4 where downloaded maps can pile up to gigabytes. Find the character save files in all of your games as well and back those up so you don't lose long hours of progress.

Collect the installers for all of the utility-type programs that you run and back them up. For example, WinAmp, dBPowerAmp, AVG Antivirus, Spybot S&D, AdAware, WinAce, QuickTime, ZoneAlarm, Java, Opera, etc.

<b>Important:</b> Download and save the installers for your motherboard, graphics card, sound card, and any other piece of hardware in your rig that needs something besides generic Windows drivers.

If you use Outlook you can export a file that will save everything. Click:
-File
-Import and Export
-Export to a file
-Personal folder file (.pst)
-Highlight personal folders at the top
-Check include subfolders check box
-Choose place to save file and file name
-Click Finish

Lastly make sure you have a DOS boot disk handy. I use a Win98 Startup disk. If you don't have one you can find the files <A HREF="http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/#win95b_boot" target="_new">here</A>.

Formatting

I will do the section on using fdisk as well if no one else volunteers.
