First here is the list of what is in the computer.:

P4C800 Deluxe
P4 3.0
1 gig OCZ PC4000
ATI 9800 pro
1-WD 80 gig HD
Antec true power 550
Lite-On CDRW

The problem is this: When I got all the stuff in the case I followed my book to start it up for the first time. The first step was to load an OS (windows 98 because it is the only version I have a full version of, I have XP home edition but it is just an update)then to load the driver cd that came with the mother board ( wich I never made it too).

After 98 was loaded and working, I started loading XP then would load the drivers and the Bios system. During the XP loading the monitor went black like it was not being used and I could not get past what ever the problem is.

I tried rebooting and unplugging stuff, but nothing is working. I am at a loss on this. How could the monitor work with windows 98 but something happened in the middle of XP. The only thing I did was plug in the ethernet cable while XP was laoding.

Could it be the graphics card or something else?

Any help would be great!! I would like to have it up and running.

first of all, did you make the same kind of installation (Win98 followed by update to XP) on another machine and it worked?

Second, can you load the WinXP in safe mode? if the safe mode is working, the problem is (most likely) some bad drivers. Especially if you installed Win98 drivers and then updated to WinXP.

So, the best thing would be to install a fresh XP from a good CD, then install the XP drivers (don't use the win98 ones).

I did load 98 then XP on my old machine and it worked. The computer I have now is brand new build. The problem is I don't even get a start up screen. I get nothing on the new computer, but, the monitor wokrs ok on the old computer. I tried pulling the cd out and restarting the computer and wanted to go into the bios system to correct somehitng, but I don't even get that. The monitor acts like it is in a sleep mode and can't wake it to work.

I guess I am kind of lost on this. While XP was loading I hooked up the ethernet cable and went dowstairs, before I went thought I looked and XP was still showing it was upgrading, I came back up and nothing. At first I thought it was arebooting, but it never came back up.

When 98 was done I was in windows looking around, then started updating to XP.

if you don't even get the initial POST information on screen then it's not XP that's at fault, but something else as it hasn't even got as far as the OS yet.

Do you still get a normal POST beep? or do you get a series of Beeps? Or nothing at all?

Well I had windows 98 up and running, but it wasn't till I tried to install XP over 98 that it acted up. XP came up to say it was working then nothing. I have been getting one beep at start up wich per my codes is a memory refresh error. I have a new bios up date to install when the OS is up and running and the new bios said it will take care of the error.

Everything that I read said to load the os before you upload the drivers and bios.

Wow, first off, do yourself a favor and fdisk the hard drive removing all current partitions. Although your Win XP is an upgrade, it will work as a fresh install without having an old OS first. So forget Win 98.

Once your HDD is wiped clean again with no partitions (or make partitions if you will use more than one) Just boot to the Win XP CD and start a fresh install. It will ask for your Win 98 CD and/or Lic number as proof you are entitled to use the upgrade version. This will be a way more stable install than going the win 98 first and upgrade path.

Just be prepared to call Microsoft for activation since you have used this Win XP lic. number before. Tell them you are replacing an old system with a new build and they will give you a new number to type in and activate XP.

Anyway, just to repeat a little advice, on a new build, never do the upgrade path, clean installation is the way to go. And the upgrade version can work as either an upgrade or for a clean installation.

If I can't get it to post, how can I clean the disk? Can I put in the floppy that came with the hard drive and clean it that way. I hope this will force it to post. If not then I have a bigger problem.

Try unplugging everything except the RAM, CPU, & VID card and see if it POSTS then. plus of course make sure everything is seated properly, but I assume you've tried that.

Regarding installing 98 then upgrading to XP.
Install XP from the start,,,it will ask for proof of OS,,,then put in 98 for it to verify then continue installing XP.

WellI have not tried that yet. I wll have to try that tonight. I just don't get it working fine one min then in the midle of loading xp it quit. Very strange.

Ahhh, sounds like it could be a bad DIMM (memory, RAM stick, whatever). If you have an extra hard drive around with known good install of Windows on it I would swap that hard drive in and see if you have the same problem. If so, then take out one DIMM at a time and see if the problem goes away.

Well Pauldh you were right. For some reason it came loose on the front part of the card. LOL I was a nerves wreck for nothing, Thanks to everyone for the help. I have the pc up and running now. Thanks again!!!

The only question I have is what is a good temp for an ATI 9800 pro. I show a temp of up to 115 f.

Good deal. Unfortunetly AGP video cards do tend to wiggle loose sometimes. You can't see it, you just have to re-seat it and see if that helps. Enjoy that system. Do yourself a favor though and do the fresh install route from now on and not the Win 98 to Win XP upgrade route.

Yeah I did the fresh install of XP only last night. Although it seems like I am missing somethings on my desk top. Maybe that is a good thing.

So what is a too high temp for the ati 9800 pro? I am runnig around 107-115 just in windows. Do you think this is too high?

I dunno off hand, someone here should. I know they're rated to handle VERY high temps. ATI's not gonna make a card that's going to hurt itself inside an average PC. They know theres people in arizona running their computers with no case fans besides the ones in their power supply in the summer (ouch!). Your card will be fine, the only negative effect from high (but not too high) temps is it will limit your OC. Besides, your temps aren't that high.
